Cafe Pyala or Cafe Jhangvi? On Pakistani urban liberals’ sectarian rants
The demonstrators, 15,000 in number marched around 15 kilometres from Ancholi to the Governor House, to mourn the murder of Askari Raza who was killed Saturday night in Gulshan-e-Iqbal when two armed men opened fire at him. During the 10-hour long sit-in outside the Governor House in Karachi, a six member committee of the Pasban-e-Jaferia met with Sindh Governor Ishratul Ebad, the IG Sindh and Deputy Speaker of Sindh Assembly Shehla Raza. After the meeting, the governor gave the suspension order of CID SSP Chaudhry Aslam. A First Information Report (FIR) has been registered against the suspects, Chaudhry Aslam and Maulana Aurangzeb Farooqui of the Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat (Sipah-e-Sahaba aka Lashkar-e-Jhangvi), who were blamed by protestors for involvement in the murder.(Source)
Shia Muslims, as everyone except apologists and affiliates of the Deep State (Teen Jeem network, Jihado-sectarian extremists) knows, are subject to an ongoing mass murder and persecution in Pakistan. It is also common knowledge that Shia killings are routinely ignored and/or misrepresented not only in the mainstream media but also in the majority of Pakistani blogs (dominated by urban elites and middle class operatives of Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad).
While right-wing extremists such as Ahmad Ludhianvi, Auranzeb Farooqi and their right-wing affiliates such as Javed Chaudhry, Hamid Mir and Ansar Abbasi are commonly known due to their anti-Shia prejudice, the most dangerous and hypocritical role is being played by refined affiliates of the ISI and Laskhar-e-Jhangvi in Pakistan’s English media and blogs (e.g., Ejaz Haider, Mosharraf Zaidi, Tammy Haq, Saleem Ali and their low-level affiliates e.g. Samad Khurram, Urooj Zia and Cafe Pyala).
It is, therefore, no surprise that Cafe Pyala, a blog which claims to be a critic of mainstream media has never written a single post on the ongoing misrepresentation of Shia massacres in Pakistani media. On the contrary, there is an ongoing history of Cafe Pyala’s anti-Shia bias which has been recorded in previous posts on Pakistan Blogzine. For example: http://pakistanblogzine.wordpress.com/2011/09/09/cafe-pyala-or-cafe-jhangvi
In the most recent expression of its Shia-Phobia, Cafe Pyala (commonly known as Cafe Jhangvi due to its pro-Sipah-e-Sahaba tendencies) misrepresented and ridiculed a peaceful protest by Shia Muslims in Karachi against the ongoing target killing of the members of their community by the ISI-backed Jihado-sectarian terrorists. Karachi’s Shia Muslims were protesting the murder of Pasban-e-Jafaria leader Askari Raza who had been previously threatened and harassed by none else than a senior police officer Aslam Chaudhry. It is common knowledge (also documented by HRW) that Sipah-e-Sahaba / Lashkar-e-Jhangvi operatives have links with Pakistan’s security agencies including ISI and police as a part of Pakistan army’s Deep State policy of nurturing and protecting the Jihado-sectarian assets.
Instead of supporting and sympathizing with Pakistan’s largest target killed faith group (Shia Muslims), Cafe Pyala used this opportunity to ridicule and misrepresent their protest, offering apologia for the nominated police officer alleged of enabling Raza’s murder by the Sipah-e-Sahaba operatives. In Cafe Jhangvi’s anti-Shia discourse, they were aided by none other than Samad Khurram (notorious Jamaatia homophobe) and Urooj Zia (a former personal assistant of Sherry Rehman) who is known to be linked with Pakistan’s military establishment.
Cafe Pyala’s logic: Since Chaudhry Aslam is a target of Taliban, he can’t be possibly involved in enabling Shia killings. By the same logic, since army itself is a victim of Taliban-LeJ, it can’t be possibly involved in enabling Shia killings by protecting and nurturing Jihado-sectarian monsters of Taliban-LeJ. Nuance as well as integrity are so clearly and completely lost on the Deep State’s proxies in Pakistani media and blogs.
It is commonly known in Karachi that some culprits belonging to law-enforcement agencies (ISI, Police etc) have been supporting Jihado-sectarian terrorists as a part of Pakistan army’s Deep State policy. The murder of Askari was a part of the Deep State’s wider policy of punishing Shia Muslims due to their opposition of the Taliban and Al Qaeda. Askari Raza was vigorously involved in legal affairs of the Shia community, for this reason was killed. Apparently CID official Chaudhry Aslam Khan’s involvement in the killing was limited to his enabling of the LeJ target killers under instruction by the local director of ISI. SSP Khan (as instructed by the ISI) was trying to get rid of Askari from the cases of some innocent Shia people, and in this course he also tried to bribe the victim. As he did not oblige, the SSP Khan hurled him life threats and ultimately made a plot to finish him off. SSP Khan is known to have links with banned outfits (Lashkar-e-Jhangvi, Sipah-e-Sahaba), he harassed Askari Raza on more than one occasions when he was working for the release of innocent Shia people from the illegal detention of the CID Anti-Extremist Cell. Chaudry Aslam previously worked with ISI to protect Dawood Ibrahim and also in some other projects to save “good Taliban” and arrest or reform “bad Taliban”.

Incredible scenes from in front of Governor House Karachi. Shia protestors refuse to budge.
cpyala Cafe Pyala
The claim of the protestors is that Ch Aslam plotted the killing of Askari Raza along with Sipahe Sahaba… Not sure why or connection.
cpyala Cafe Pyala
In today’s Pak it seems only way to get things done is by protest. Took a dharna to get FIR for murder registered. So much for governance.
cpyala Cafe Pyala
@alteridom That is understandable. Trying to find out what the alleged charges against Ch Aslam are..

‘Dharna consists largely of youngsters’, Geo anchor tells us. Don’t think it’s the PTI youth.

Protestors claim SSP CID Chaudhry Aslam is somehow involved in the murder of Pasban-e-Jafria leader Askari Raza…
cpyala Cafe Pyala
…Protestors have been assured that if it is proved that he is involved, he will be arrested.

To those 5 people holding up a banner in a hall in solidarity, this is what a REAL ‘Occupy Movement’ looks like. Tents set up.

Interestingly, Chaudhry Aslam SSP CID, who himself is target of Taliban, has been suspended on demands of angry protestors.
UroojZia Urooj Zia
@cpyala Ch. Aslam’s team had been conducting raids against SSP and militant Shia groups since shortly before Muharram. Hence the connection.
cpyala Cafe Pyala
@UroojZia So you think it’s only to prevent action against Shia militants that he has been implicated?
UroojZia Urooj Zia
@cpyala Nopes, ppl abt whose arrests I know we’re involved with militant groups. Aslam’s team was doing a good, albeit outside-the-law job.

The leaders of various shia organization on Wednesday demanded of the Chief Justice of Sindh High Court, CM Sindh, IG Sindh Police and CCPO Karachi to immediately arrest the nominated culprits involved in the target killing of Mukhtar Bukhari Advocate. Addressing the joint press conference at Karachi press club, Maulana Mirza Yousuf Hussain of Shia Action Committee, Allama Aftab Jaffari of Jaffari Alliance Pakistan, Maulana Munawar Naqvi of Majlis-e-Wehdat Muslameen (MWM), S.M.Haider of Pasban-e-Aza, Maulana Shabir Messami of Shia Ulema Council, Askari Reza Legal Aid committee Incharge and others alleged that the SSP CID Chaudhry Mohammad Aslam was nominated in the target killing case of Mukhtar Bukhari advocate and urged the government to immediately suspend him and investigate his links with outlawed organization.
According to the Shiite News Correspondent, Shia Muslims alleged that Chaudhry Aslam was using illegal means to pressurize the applicant of the petition of Mukhtar Bukhari target killing to withdraw the petition against him. On the occasion, Askari Reza Legal Aid committee Incharge, the petitioner, said that Mukhtar Bukhari advocate was the advocate on the several high profile cases including the Muntazir Imam illegal detention case against SSP CID Chaudhry Mohammad Aslam. He alleged that the SSP CID had been threatened the Mukhtar advocate to withdraw from the illegal detention case of Muntazir Imam but the Mukhtar Bukhari advocate had refused his threat and continue the legal assistance of Muntazir Imam. He demanded of the CCPO to immediately establish a committee to probe the high profile killing of senior advocate Mukhtar Bukhari saying that the Eidgah Police station was registered the FIR against unknown people without any consultation with the family. Askari Reza said that he was filed the petition in Sindh High Court on 25th July for the registration of the FIR against Chaudhry Aslam and a leader of outlawed SSP on section A-22 adding that the FIR of the advocate target killing case has not been registered. He alleged that Sarjani Town Police has registered a FIR against him on the target killing of outlawed SSP worker on the next two hours after the petition in Sindh High Court. He said that he is ready to surrender himself to investigate him in the FIR lodged against him and requested the Chief Justice Sindh High court to take immediate action of the SSP CID against him. He claimed that the object behind the FIR was to force him to withdraw from the petition filed against the Chaudhry Aslam of the target killing of Mukhtar Bukhari advocate and demanded of the IG Sindh to suspend the SSP CID Chaudhry Mohammad Aslam to investigate the case.
After the press Conference at Legal Aid Committee Incharge of Shia Community, Askari Reza reached at Artillery Maidan Police Station to surrender himself on the case registered against him at Sarjani Town Police Station.

Sectarian violence: Shia protesters march to Governor House
By Faraz Khan
Published: January 1, 2012
KARACHI: Thousands of angry Shia protesters marched to the Governor House on Sunday to protest the killing of a community leader. Askari Raza, 40, was attacked in Gulshan-e-Iqbal on Saturday evening and died of his wounds in hospital later. He was a leader of the Pasban-e-Jaferia Foundation. Members of various Shia organisations participated in his funeral prayers on Sunday and blocked Shahrah-e-Pakistan as they made their way with his body to the Governor House. As many as five to six thousand people were part of the procession and Shia leaders, including Maulana Nadir, Maulana Ali Muhammad, Maulana Munawar Naqvi, Allama Furqan Haider Abidi and Allama Hasan Zafar Naqvi, were in attendance. The protesters are demanding action against Chaudhry Aslam Khan, an SSP of the Crime Investigation Department’s Anti-Extremist Cell, who they say is involved in the target killing of Raza. Raza was actively involved in the legal affairs of the Shia community and had even gone to court in the case of a recent killing of a Shia man in Karachi. SSP Khan is named in the case.

Karachi
Thousands of protesters streamed outside the Governor House on Sunday against the killing of a Shia leader the other day.
People were taking Askari Raza’s funeral procession in Ancholi, when some armed miscreants opened fire at the crowd. This created a law and order situation in the area, as the people then forced the closure of shop and resorted to aerial firing.
A motorcycle was also burnt near the Water Pump. Police was called in to control the situation. However, tension soon spread to other areas, including Ayesha Manzil, Liaquatabad, Jamshed Quarters, Soldier Bazar and Saddar.
Later, thousands of protesters marched towards the Governor House to lodge their protest. They staged a sit-in there for several hours. Some leaders of the Shia community have also lodged a complaint at the Gulshan-e-Iqbal police station over the killing of Raza. They have nominated two clerics in the killing.
The protesters were still protesting outside the Governor’s House till our going to the press. The protesters were demanding action against SSP Chaudhry Aslam Khan and the two religious clerics.
Askari Raza, a leader of the Pasban-e-Jaferia Foundation, was gunned down in Gulshan-e-Iqbal on Saturday. On Saturday, after the murder, tension gripped Ancholi, Liaquatabad, Numaish Chowrangi, Patel Para, Jamshed Road, Pehlwan Goth, Gulistan-e-Jauhar, Rizvia Society and Abbas Town.
