Dozens of Pakistanis and Americans of Pakistani origin rallied in New York outside the headquarters of the United Nations to protest the ongoing genocide of Shia Muslims by Pakistan army-backed Jihadi-sectarian militants.
Chanting slogans such as “Stop Shia Genocide”, “Down with Taliban”, “Down with Saudi Arabia”, “Down with Sipah-e-Sahaba”, “Down with ISI”, “Down with Media Silence”, the protesters demanded the United Nations to pay urgent attention to the state-sponsored persecution and target killing of Shia Muslims and other oppressed communities of Pakistan. They also demanded the accountability of commanders of Pakistan army and ISI who are supporting and promoting anti-Shia Jihadi-sectarian militants (e.g., Difa-e-Pakistan Council, Haqqani Taliban, Sipah-e-Sahaba Pakistan (aka ASWJ) etc).
The protesters were also chanting slogans against human rights groups, particularly Human Rights Commission of Pakistan and Amnesty International, which have failed to document and publish statistics on Shia killings in Pakistan, and have also failed to boldly name the institutions (Pakistan army, ISI) enabling the Shia genocide through Jihadi-sectarian footsoldiers.
They also chanted slogans against Pakistani media, both Urdu and English press, which has maintained silence on Shia genocide or misrepresents institutional massacre of Shia Muslims as a routine Sunni-Shia sectarian violence.
“I am here today because I am horrified at the misrepresentation of Shia genocide by Pakistan’s elitist Enligsh press, by Dawn and The Friday Times,” protester Rzivi said.
“You can hate Shia Muslims, that’s your sectarian bias, but you can’t mistreat or kill them. You have to protect them like the way you protect every other citizen, with equal respect and honour,” another protester said.
Participants particularly protested against three major massacres in Pakistan in the last two months including the Khanpur massacre in Punjab (January 2012), Parachinar massacre in FATA (February 2012) and Gilgit massacre in Kohistan (February 2012). They also said that media and human rights groups’ silence on Shia genocide was itself a war crime.
Previously a similar protest was organized last month outside the Pakistan embassy in London. http://criticalppp.com/archives/72813
