A few things come to mind when observing the fallout of Mansoor Ijaz ratting out Hussain Haqqani on the Memo. The first is that PPP’s media strategy or lack therof has reached a crisis point and secondly that few tears are being shed by genuine PPP workers, activists and leaders at the resignation of Hussain Haqqani.

Allow me to elaborate:

If there is anyone more upset than the PPP government about what increasingly looks like the end of Husain Haqqani’s tenure in Washington, it is Islamabad’s press corps. During his time as Pakistan’s ambassador to the US, Haqqani was always freely available for comment and loved nothing more than to give an unsolicited titbit or two, ironically enough, usually on BBM.

But journalists are also finally realising how Haqqani may have played them. Soon after Mansoor Ijaz wrote his infamous column in the Financial Times, Haqqani was quick to get into action. WASHINGTON: Mansoor Ijaz, a Pakistani-American businessman, told Dawn on Thursday that it indeed was Ambassador Husain Haqqani who asked him to deliver an alleged incendiary memo to the then American military chief days after the May 2 US raid on Osama bin Laden’s compound, seeking his help to avert a possible military coup in Pakistan.

It is now well established that by virtue of his influential position as Pakistan Ambassador to the USA and excellent social skills, Ambassador Haqqani has been able to create a personal clout within Pakistan’s urban elites, most of whom remain vehemently anti-PPP and anti-Zardari.

In the aftermath of the memogate, currently many urban-centric writers, bloggers in Pakistan and internationally are busy in presenting Ambassador Haqqani as indispensable for democracy in Pakistan, promoting his real and imaginary services to democracy and the PPP. There is a great pandemonium of urban (fake) liberals on Twitter. Mansoor Ijaz has published his BBM conversations with an unknown government official. Admiral Mullen has finally acknowledged that the memo in fact existed and was delivered to him. Najam Sethi has predicted that Husain Haqqani might soon lose his job. Husain Haqqani himself has offered to resign.

With the much speculated resignation of Husain Haqqani in sight, there is an environment of mourning in the circle of Pakistan’s urban elites on Twitter.

It is quite entertaining to see known PPP-phobes or Zardari-phobes to see competing with each other praising Ambassador Haqqani and highlighting his indispensability to Pakistan and PPP. Those who usually keep complete silence
