How many followers are enough on Twitter? – by Laibaah

by admin

Not unlike other meaningless, shallow things, the total number of followers on Twitter is fast becoming a matter of social status and personal prestige for Pakistan’s urban elites and social media activists.

This aspect was recently highlighted when Mubasher Lucman, a TV anchor known for links with Pakistan’s military establishment and its chosen political parties e.g., PTI, MQM etc, was spotted by none else than a PTI social media activist Dr Awab who tweeted (on 31 Jan 2012) that:

DrAwab Awab Alvi
SUSPICIOUS @MubasherLucman jumps from 6092 followers to 103,595 followers overnight? > dummy followers, each having 2-3 followers each

After being caught red-handed, Mubasher Lucman was ridiculed on Twitter by some Pakistani Tweeps, one of whom also compared his desire to have fake followers on Twitter with his objection of (the so called) fake votes in Pakistan’s electoral register.

@UmarCheema1 Mubashar Lucman has over 100,000 twitter followers. P.S He bought followers (fake accounts) but cries over bogus voter lists.

However, Mubasher Lucman is just one example. A number of Pakistan’s urban elites are known to have bought thousands of Twitter followers in order to increase their social status, e.g., a female champion of human rights working in a Jang Group’s project was seen jumping from a few hundred followers to more than 12000 followers within a span of 48 hours.

There seems to be a rat race going on to get more and more followers. For these people (many of them have real names (or Twitter Ids) but have fake discourses or self-centred opinions), it’s important to increase their followers; for them, it sounds great to be able to say that they have tons of followers. That makes them feel real popular, like giving a party and everybody wants to be there. That is what they think it feels like.

But these followers are least interested followers. Most of them are spammers, marketers and automated feed tweeters. They are not following our heroes for their social work or opinion, they are not following them as an admiration of their work but they are actually following them as bought out or least interested followers.

This then brings us to the million dollar question of how many followers are enough on Twitter.

The answer we provide below may offer little satisfaction to those who want to massage their ego by counting the total number of followers they have.

It is not the quantity of followers, it is the quality which matters.

In other words, compared to more than 100,000 useless, thoughtless, non-interested followers following our urban elite hero, a social media activist who has only 300 quality followers may be much more effective in spreading his or her message via Twitter. The quality of followers is shaped by the genuine interest the followers have in one’s tweets, ideas and views, the frequency of reciprocal engagement and exchange of views, the meaningful and substantive outreach in relevant and diverse groups, and the existence of a virtual community of practice.

So the answer to the question “How much followers are enough on Twitter” is very simple, any number of followers which are interested, relevant and remain connected with one’s tweets. More often than not, such number will remain no more than a few hundred.

The other main thing is engagement of the twitter followers. Whether they are responsive or not? To make them responsive one needs to post something interesting on one’s blog, ask interesting question and not hesitate from taboo topics or opinions.

If urbane elites just need a social proof that tens of thousands of people are following, they can adopt such strategy or buy followers but this will help only in social proof and can not be utilized for purposeful engagement. Although it would look really cool that huge number of people are following you but they are not there for you. Instead of having 100k non-interested followers, only a few dozen or few hundred engaged followers is rather preferable and much worthier to be proud of.
