Dunya News must not politicize the murder case against Mian Amer, Atif Aslam and Qasmi

Three Murderers

Related post: Kohenoor TV studio fire kills five during Ramzan transmission. Thank you, corporate media!

On 10 January 2012, an Atif Aslam musical concert at the Al Hamra Arts Council, Lahore (organized by Mian Amer Mehnood’s Punjab Group of Colleges) turned into a tragedy when three girls got killed while five were critically injured in a stampede.

It is possible to identify three parties responsible for the tragic death of the innocent girls:

(1) Mian Amer Mehmood, CEO of Punjab Group of Colleges. The Punjab Group administration is notorious for collecting large sums of money from students converting academic institutions into ruthlessly commercial businesses. They sold more than 8000 tickets for the Atif Aslam concert whereas there were only 4000 places in the venue (Al-Hamra Cultural Complex);

(2) Atif Aslam and other members of his band; they contributed to the tragic death by: (a) agreeing to perform in an overcrowded hall; they were paid Rs500,000 in addition to the concert fee to keep their mouth shut, (b) enabling a stampede by providing autographs to girls in an already overcrowded hall, and (c) lack of public safety considerations in their extremely expensive concerts; and

(3) Ata-ul-Haq Qasmi, in his capacity as the Chairman of the Lahore Arts Council including the Al-Hamra Cultural Complex.

All of the aforementioned parties had clear commercial stakes in the concert in question; their greed and mismanagement resulted into death of three innocent girls.

This is not a case of homicide, this is a case of cold-blooded murder; the police must arrest Mian Amir Mahmood, Atif Aslam and Atta-ul-Haq Qasmi and start criminal proceedings rejecting all forms of political or media pressure.

According to news reports, the Atif Aslam concert was held on 10 Jan 2012 at Lahore’s Al Hamra Cultural Complex. When the girls tried to exit the venue after the event, there was a stampede resulting in three young girls stumbling and getting crushed. According to reports, the deceased girls were students aged between 17-22. They were Maheen Naseem, 17, Sara Nawaz, 22 and Nimra, 16. There were reportedly between 6000 and 7000 girls at the concert, much beyond the venue’s capacity.

Here is a video report of how a family mourns the loss of their loved one!

Talking to The Express Tribune, Maheen’s father Naseem Abbas blamed the organiser, Punjab Group of Colleges’ administration for mismanagement. “Why they allowed more students in the complex when there was not enough space,” he asked. An eyewitness Bismah said that a lack of security contributed to the tragic incident. She added that the stampede started when a larger door was opened to let attendees out. Extra people at the venue had caused a rush when the concert ended. (Source)

It is, however, a fact all of the three accused parties are highly influential.

1. Mian Amer is the owner and CEO of Dunya News TV Network (employing people such as Mubashir Lucman, Nasim Zehra, Meher Bokhari, Rauf Klasra etc), owner and chairman of the Punjab Group of Colleges (University of Central Punjab) and a former nazim (administrator) of Lahore City District Government. He started his political life as an activist of Jamaat-e-Islami’s student wing (Islami Jamiat-e-Talaba) at the Punjab University and was known as a tiny-terror at the PU because of his habit of brandishing firearms in the university premises along with other IJT militants. After having done his MBA from the Punjab University, he launched the Punjab Group of Colleges in 1985 that culminated into the University of Central Punjab. He joined the PML-Q (a pro0army political party) and was considered very close to the military dictator General Musharraf and the Punjab CM Pervez Elahi. Currently he is known to be about to join the new pro-army party, i.e., Imran Khan’s PTI.

2. Atif Aslam, a mediocre singer by all standards, who has been able to hoarde much more wealth and fame than probably what he deserved, thanks to increasing Western-copycatism and declining indigenous culture in Pakistan. He is rumoured to have bribed the Punjab Police to remove his name from the FIR.

3. Ata-ul-Haq Qasmi is a paid propagandist of the PML-N. He was elevated to the position of Ambassador of Pakistan in Norway and Thailand during Nawaz Sharif’s reign from 1997 to 1999. Currently he is a chairman of the Lahore Arts Council (including Al Hamra).

On 7 February 2012, the police finally registered a murder case against Mian Ahmer Mehmood. We welcome this step, justice must be visibly and transparently served in this case. A similar FIR should be filed against other two culprits, Atif Aslam and Ata-ul-Haq Qasmi.

All three of the accused, Mian Amer, Atif Aslam and Qasmi must be arrested and awarded exemplary punishments so that such tragedies do not recur in the future.

Copy of the murder case FIR (police report) against Mian Aamir

Gulberg Police registered a case of murder against Mian Amer Mehmood, the chief executive of Dunya News and chairman of the Punjab Group of Colleges, and 63 other officials of the Punjab Group of Colleges late on Wednesday night. The case was registered on the complaint of Muhammad Nawaz Warraich, a resident of Canal View, against Mian Amer, Dr Sohail Afzal, Tahir Aagha, Major (r) Saleem and 60 other unidentified people. Warraich claimed in his complaint that his two daughters Farah Nawaz and Zainab Nawaz were students of the Punjab Group of Colleges and on January 9, he dropped them both off to attend a cultural show organised by the college administration where both sustained serious injuries along with dozens of other girls in a stampede. He said Farah later died at Services Hospital while Zainab was discharged after treatment. He said in his complaint that the people he had named were responsible for the death of his daughter, so police registered a case against them.

However, as expected, the Dunya News TV and its paid employees (journalists, anchors) have started making false hue and cry, politicizing a purely criminal case against their CEO. While Dunya TV anchors and other paid propagandists of Mian Amer Mehmood want to politicize the case, by presenting it as a conspiracy against free media, the police and the judiciary as well as the Punjab government must not bow down to the blackmailing tactics of Mian Amer Mehmood. He, along with all other accused, must be arrested and justice must be seen to be served.

Ironically, the champion of justice and rule of law, Imran Khan too has decided to support and protect the killer by politicizing the murder case. This is what Imran Khan wrote in a Twitter message on 10 Feb:

ImranKhanPTI Imran Khan
All pls forward message: PML-N resorted to death threats to owner and anchors of Dunya TV. Let world know true nature of these people
9 Feb 2012

In the meanwhile, Dunya TV is busy in the baseless propaganda misleading other journalists and media organizations:

Dunya News Bureau Chief Salman Ghani told reporters that the case was registered by the police on the instructions of the Punjab government in order to stop Dunya News from telling the truth about it and exposing its misdeeds, especially the negligence of the Punjab government in the spurious drugs scandal.

Finally, Dunay TV and Mian Amer were successful in their dirty pressure tactics, the Punjab government’s law minster announced that the murder case against Mian Amer was being suspended:

In a late night development, the Punjab government directed Punjab Police to suspend the first information report (FIR) against Mian Amer and the others. Law Minister Rana Sanaullah told reporters that the case registered against Mian Amer and others was illegal as police could not register two cases of one incident. He said the home secretary had conducted an enquiry earlier in which he held former Model Town Division superintendent of police (SP) Malik Awais responsible for the incident in which the girl lost her life. On the recommendation of the home secretary, he said, the Punjab government had transferred and suspended Awais, who later got the case registered against Mian Amer and others. He said the Punjab government had ordered Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Maj Mubashar Ullah to conduct an enquiry into the negligence of police in this regard. Mian Amer later on called the presidents of all unions of journalists and thanked them for their cooperation.

We note with concern that Pakistan’s media as well as bloggers are generally silent on this episode. Except BBC Urdu and Pakistan Today, the news of the murder case against Mian Amer was blacked out by all Pakistani newspapers and channels. Almost all human rights organizations and activists too are silent on this case because of blackmailing tactics of Dunya TV and also because many of them are personal friends of Dunya TV anchors Nasim Zehra, Mubashir Lucman etc. Pakistan Blogzine refuses to be a part of this criminal silence!

Ironically, a section of the media had downplayed the entire incident which left the students in utter awe. The section of media includes some newspapers and TV channels, either owned by the same group of colleges or in commercial relations with each other. Sultan Malik a student of PCC said, “The media had created its hegemony and trying to silence those speaking against their commercial interests; it’s really sad.” (Source: Pakistan Today

Comments (various sources)

Alvi:

Just bcause CEO of Punjab Colleges has a TV channel he should get away with homicide. These were three young girls who died because of criminal negligence of a school owned by this man who gained prominence under Mush and has become billionaire. Please remember this paper claims to be legacy of a prominent journalist, a man who stood up for principles.

Is the media going to behave like a mafia of the lawyers?. Mian Amir must be tried for death of these 3 innocent young girls. This blackmail by this channel must not be allowed.

Tariq:

Mian Amir a beneficiary of a dictator whose anchor ML was a minister in that cabinet should not be allowed to get away with blackmail and abuse and evade prosecution for Culpable Homicide of 3 innocent teenagers who died in a stampede while attending an overcrowded musical concert arranged by a school owned by him at a hall with inadequate capacity and emergency exits for an emergency evacuation. Media should behave with responsibility instead of grouping together for a man like Mian Amir who has used his channel to blackmail others and help him get away with criminal irregularities and violations of law.

sumbal:

Mian amir was city nazim of Musharf now he is working for pti .dunya channel is mafia .our media is going to destroy our country.

One of those “five critically injured students” is my sister and they could not go any more beyond misrepresentation as they already have. They Did Not transfer her to the hospital, if it wasnt for some random student there who saw my sister being stampeded over and dragged her aside, she would have died. The girl called us through my sister’s cell phone and then when we tried to get to the place to pick her up, they wouldnt even let us anywhere near the area. The entrances were closed and the police was neither helping the students themselves, nor letting anyone else get inside to do it. We finally made contact with someone on the inside of Gaddafi stadium. They picked up my sister, while she was unconcious, covered in blood and had been run over by hundreds of girls. And when I say “hundreds” I do Not exaggerate. We found our own way to Services hospital and still were unaware of what had actually transpired. There, a media personnel informed us of the event. Just right now, as my sister is still in the hospital, recieving Oxygen and undergoing X rays and Ultrasounds, we have found out that it was the College Guards that started the stampede by raising their sticks on the girls that were running after Atif Aslam and started the entire panick. There was NO Bomb threat. I repeat. There was NO Bomb Threat. That is the fancy cover up created by “The Private College’s” media smartasses. If Punjab College Management feel that they can keep this under the wraps, then they are sorely mistaken, I went thier too, a few years ago, and I have great respect for the education system. However, this is intolerable! They are responsible for the death of three innocent students. They are responsoble for the physical and pshycological damage caused to multiple other students. They will be held accountable. If the media in our country really is as free as it claims to be: you might want to print the truth.

@ zainab iqtidar
Sorry about your sister. Your comment is full of disappointment and anger as it should be. Dont know if you want to even think about this right now but the punjab group of colleges actually owns a lot of our media. You must have seen ads on private news channels and just before hourly news sessions that show that they actually sponsor and fund a lot of media channels. That said, it still doesnt mean that no action will be taken. Your sister is lucky that she was rescued and i pray for her health. Why was she taken to services hospital when there is a hospital right next to gaddafi stadium called hameed lateef hospital? Was it because of the pressure of circumstances at that time or because of some other reason?

The organisers haven’t learned from what happened in India few days back in Delhi. They should have anticipated this and not just go for collections. They have to arrested and thrown in jail.

I am shocked to read this news. This is horrifying to imagine how 3 poor little girls were killed and 10 others injured. The administration of Punjab College must be held responsible. There was no bomb threat, they are lying through the media they own.
They brag of bringing Atif Aslam to their concerts, yet could not control any untoward situation. And let more and more people come in and try to create a ‘Mahol’ for the bloody singers. They don’t care about their students, all they care about is to control the people like animals with their uncompetitive guards.
At anytime the faculty of Punjab College who have no expertise to control such situations would order to close the doors without analyzing the situation of the crowd.
Years back we faced the same situation. And i remember if i didn’t have a support of my friend i would have died in the hands of the mad crowd trying to get in to watch Atif Aslam.

It is more digusting to note that Mian Aamer Mehmood (Punjab Group of Colleges Director) also owns Dunya News and has a major stake in the Lahore-based C42 channel. Both channels did not air this news the whole night, not for a second. Shameful!

Another case of negligence by an ignorant school administration. Unfortunately, like the Kalar Kahar Bus incident, where the owner of the school was taken into custody, here the mighty influential Mian Amer will go unpunished, rather untouched. Our sympathies are with the parents of the deceased girls, as our heads hang in shame for this traversity of justice.

The security guards are not responsible for this..Since i had been the part of the same institute and such stupid events had been happening all the way..Guards do what they are asked to.Catch the admin and parents also should think once before sending their childern to such places.

Zainab Iqtidar
My sister was one of the five critically injured students. The Media is not highlighting the extent of damage done to the students. The girl on the next bed to hers had a fractured Spinal Cord! Two had fractured legs and their faces were beyong recognition. My sister is on oxygen right now. They need to be held responsible! The cant just shrug this under the rug. The guards baton charged the girls and they failed to open the gates. They opened them when a huge pressure had already built up by the panicked girls, scared of the guards. Students flooded through the gates and those who fell got crushed.

Zeeshan ·

My sister was also there Thanks to Allah that she manage to safe her life but her friend she died and they both fell during stampede ….We all are here in Saudi Arabia we just send our sister in good hands for study …but just imagine this is the good hands ..after two days nobody will remember about this accident….what about the media this is our independent media….These girls wese innocent…my sister stil in shock her mom is weaping and crying since last night….just imagine the feelings of those whs lost their daughters ……plz Pakistan we are still watiing for only one thing which can benefit your people…we are being abused by other societies because we are responsible

  1. 3 girls die in Alhamra stampede
    By: Jam Sajjad Hussain
    January 10, 2012

LAHORE – At least three female students of Punjab Group of Colleges were crushed to death and four others wounded as stampede erupted at Alhamra Cultural Complex soon after the musical concert ended late on Monday. Around four other students went missing till filing of this report.

‘A stampede erupted due to the mismanagement of the colleges administration, which arranged this annual musical function attended by some 5,000 female students from across the Punjab’, said Habib Awan, Manager Gaddafi Cultural Complex. He said around 50 security guards of the Punjab Group of Colleges hurled wooden rods towards female students when they left the complex and approached the road side area of the cultural venue. Resultantly, they ran back, towards the girls coming out of the concert hall, causing the stampede.

Several horrible scenes were witnessed while hundred of girls from Punjab Group of Colleges, owned by former District Nazim Lahore Mian Amer Mahmood, left the concert hall abruptly.

A senior police officer confirmed that three girls died during the mishap but only one was identified as Maheen Abbas.
Punjab Chief Minister also took note of the incident and ordered the authorities concerned to conduct inquiry as earlier as possible. However, no official of the educational institutional chain was available to comment.

  3. The All Knowing….Lucman

It became even sadder when DUNYA TV figured out that an FIR had been lodged against their owner, Mian Amir who also happens to own the Punjab Group of Colleges. And that is when the figurative **** hit the fan for DUNYA TV. Within a space of 5 minutes, they went ballistic as if their offices were under siege and they were broadcasting live from Homs in Syria rather than from their comfy office block in Lahore. They actually had violin music playing in the background while they narrated the story of HOW THE GOVERNMENT OF PUNJAB HAD LODGED AN FIR AGAINST THEIR OWNER because DUNYA TV was saying the TRUTH. Now this claim on its own is misreporting of the highest order as the Government of Punjab did not do that. It was the father of one of the girls killed at Punjab College’s Concert in Lahore. And to prove it, the picture above is of the FIR. IF you do not know this story, let me explain. You remember a few weeks ago there was a stampede at a college concert in Lahore which was played out as the Atif Aslam Concert where the exit doors were shut down and a bomb threat caused a stampede resulting the deaths of three girls. Well that story was killed off very quickly and it did not even play once on DUNYA TV because the owner of that college was Mian Amir, who also owns Dunya TV. But after failing to pay off the victim’s family, an FIR was lodged.

But DUNYA TV took this and turned it in to something that could give them political Milage by saying the Government of Punjab did this. And what is worse is while they were reporting that the FIR was filed, they did not mention even once in 3 hours for exactly what instance was it filed instead they did their best to spread the narrative that it because DUNYA TV had raised the Punjab Institute of Cardiology story and now they were being punished for it. Logically if that were the case, GEO and Express would have been screwed over too but no DUNYA TV did not think of that logic.

The fact of the matter is, this whole episode has shown how childish our media is. Within 4 hours, one media group for its own purposes had spread a rumor that affects the livelihoods of millions of people and then had managed to snub a story about their sister concern (Punjab Colleges) and turn that in to a story of political victimization. All this took 4 hours. That is scary to say the least.

While this discussion on responsible media and the need for media’s role to be well defined, we need to start moving towards specifics now. The time for awareness and advocacy is nearly over; actual actions need to be taken now. Things like what DUNYA TV did yesterday cannot be tolerated in decent or even semi-decent societies where a news channel can endanger millions of livelihoods and then cry political victimization as part of its grand scheme of blackmailing a provincial government. We as the citizens cannot sit ideally by and let this happen because it is insulting to our intelligence. Channels like DUNYA TV cannot be allowed to continue claiming that they are independent and unbiased. They need to clarify that they are agenda based news outlets there to provide cover for their owners’ other business ventures because that is a fact. It is about time we start calling things as they are instead of hiding behind the myth of being unbiased and objective.

And just to remind you, Mubasher Lucman, who always goes around claiming to be honest is the same guy who bought Twitter Followers. Who does that? And yet this guy did. So think about his mentality next time you hear anything coming from his mouth. And for your comic pleasure following is the video where he makes a claim about Bird Flu without presenting an iota of proof and the Anchor lets him go on without once asking for evidence.

  4. APRIL 4, 2010

    Panic at Dunya?
So here’s some news circulating on the journalists’ mailing group regarding Dunya TV’s former Director News Absar Alam’s case against the Dunya TV management for the recovery of monies allegedly due to him and not yet paid by his former employers.

I haven’t been able to verify this information, which seems to be taken from some unnamed news report, but it sounds too remarkable to be made up. Thought I would share it – pretty much as is – with these caveats…

SC lawyer terms judicial policy “bull shit”
Mian Amer, YBM’s lawyer terms judicial policy “bull shit”
Accuses the court of “unholy haste”, challenges to file contempt of court case against him
“LAHORE–April 02:–A Supreme Court lawyer lost his temper Friday in the civil court of Judge Khizer Hayat Minhas, shouted at him, used foul language against the judiciary, termed the National Judicial Policy, envisaged by Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry, as “bull shit”, demanded the court to slow down the dispensation of justice process and dared the judge to file a contempt of court case against him for using harsh language.
An indecent replay of Faisalabad civil court incident was averted here on Friday morning when the Senior Civil Judge, Khizer Hayat Minhas, kept his grace and cool and let the lawyer, Mian Zafar Iqbal Klanori, out his frustration and anger at him. On the repeated insistence of the lawyer the judge then put everything on record, in writing, what the lawyer had shouted in the court.
The lawyer of the defendant exploded in the court in anger when he realized that an important witness from the UK has been produced by the plaintiff in the court which was unwilling to buy the delaying tactics of the defendant.
Because of the insults hurled at him by the Supreme Court lawyer, the Judge was left with no other option but to refer the case back to the District Judge, Zawar Ahmed, to transfer the case to another judge. The District Judge would decide to transfer the case on Saturday morning. Saad Rasool, the lawyer of the plaintiff, will appear before the District Judge.
The case has been filed by ex-Director News Dunya News TV, Absar Alam, against former Nazim Lahore and CEO of Dunya News, Mian Amer Mahmood and MD Dunya News, Yousaf Baig Mirza for the recovery of his lawful dues.
Mian Zafar Iqbal, the lawyer of Mian Amer Mahmood and Yousaf Beg Mirza, panicked when he found that an important witness, another ex-Director News of Dunya News, Aamir Ghauri, had arrived in the court from the UK to give his testimony in this case.”

If true, does this mean that Dunya TV management is feeling the pinch? Do recall that Alam is asking for 77 lakhs in outstanding dues.

    : : : UPDATE : : :

This recently in (also uncredited) on the journalists’ forum:

Application against Dunya News lawyer sent to CJ
“After the unfortunate incident of terming the judicial policy as “bullshit” on Friday in the court of Civil Judge Khizer Hayat Minhas, by Dunya News lawyer, Mian Zafar Iqbal Kalanauri, the District and Session Judge Lahore, Zawar Ahmed, sent the case against Mian Amer and Yousaf Baig Mirza to Civil Judge Rafaqat Ali Qamar.
Monday, April 5th, has been set the next hearing date.
Earlier, the Session Judge called the lawyers of both sides in his chamber to discuss the complaint of Civil Judge Khizer Hayat who had sent the case to District Judge Zawar Ahmed after Dunya News lawyer realising that an important witness had arrived in the court from the UK, panicked, shouted at the judge and accused him of “unholy haste.”
He also termed Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar ahmed’s National Judicial Policy, aimed at ensuring speedy dispensation of justice to all, as “bullshit”.
The case against Mian Amer, ex-nazim Lahore and CEO of Dunya News, and Yousaf Beg Mirza Managing Director Dunya News, has been filed by ex-Director News and senior journalist Absar Alam.
Mian Amer and YBM, despite repeated reminders, had failed to clear Absar Alam’s lawful dues for the last one year. Hence the ex-Director News sued Mian Amer and YBM for reneging on their legal, financial obligations and violation of the written contract.
Another ex-Director News, Aamir Ghauri, has traveled from the UK to stand in the witness box confirming the unprofessional handling of working journalists by Dunya News management.
In a strange coincidence, the plaintiff, Absar Alam, and his lawyer, Saad Rasool, have started receiving threatening emails and phone calls since the case proceedings started.
The plaintiff has asked the federal and provincial governments, Chief Justice Supreme Court of Pakistan, Chief Justice Lahore High Court, Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists, Rawalpindi/Islamabad Union of Journalists, National Press Club, all representative bodies of journalists to take note of these threats and harassment of a senior journalist and his lawyer.
The issue has been brought to the notice of Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry, and Chief Justice Lahore High Court Khawaja Sharif with an appeal to take it up in accordance with the law.
Federal and Punjab governments have also been asked to provide security to the plaintiff, his lawyer and the witnesses as the number of threatening emails is on the rise.
An FIR was lodged with the FIA about these threatening and defaming emails. The FIA is investigating this matter.”

Now phone and email threats?! Who says the media is not a mafia!

LABELS: ABSAR ALAM, DUNYA TV, LAW AND JUSTICE, MIAN AAMIR MAHMOOD, YBM

Dunya TV Now In A Proper Court
I had been wondering recently whatever happened to that Maheen Usmani case against Yousuf Baig Mirza (YBM) over at Dunya TV. Things had been awfully quiet for a long time. And lo and behold, here comes some tangential news.

It seems that former Director News Absar Alam has filed a case in court against Dunya TV Chairman Mian Aamir Mahmood (who just happens to be the city nazim of Lahore as well) and Dunya TV Managing Director YBM to recover allegedly unpaid “salary and other dues” of some Rs. 77 lakhs. At a court hearing today, local civil judge Khizar Hayat Minhas has ordered the respondents to file written statements at the next hearing on February 3. It’ll be in the papers in the morning I suppose.

Now, Absar Alam (who used to work for Geo previously) was the Director News, after whose resignation, the whole Maheen Usmani case – in which she accused YBM of sexual harassment – came to light. In fact, Ms. Usmani alleged that the first instance of such harassment occurred while Mr. Alam was still the Director News and that after she reported the matter to him, he had helped assuage her concerns and shielded her from YBM. It was Alam’s departure that had led to, she claimed, YBM exacting revenge on her and making life unbearable for her at Dunya TV. Part of the sleazy undertones of that case were that YBM and his minions had been accused of spreading innuendo about the professional relationship between Alam and Usmani. Could Absar Alam’s grievances against Dunya TV stem from the fallout of the same case?

Obviously, we still don’t know the truth of the matter since no independent inquiry was ever conducted (an internal inquiry did absolve YBM of any wrong-doing, though its results were never accepted by Usmani) and subsequently Usmani moved abroad with her husband, apparently to get away from it all. In any case, the case by Absar Alam is likely to re-ignite interest in the dormant case.

On a side-note, just how does one have pending dues of 77 lakhs? Was Absar Alam not paid his salary for a really long time? Or did his contract specify the payment of X months of salary in case he resigned? I mean, that’s like more than 12 months of salary if his salary was 600,000 or more than six months of salary if his salary was 12 lakhs a month. I really should do that story about salaries in the electronic media one of these days.

  5. Former chief reporter of Nawa i Waqt Salman Ghani and Dunya TV

“There is no doubt that Salman Ghani, former chief reporter of Nawa-i-Waqt
was on the payroll of Mian Amir Mehmood for many years while he was working
with Nawa-I-Waqt. This unholy deal started when Mian Amir was dictator
Musharraf’s sweet boy and the Mayor of Lahore. Not only Salman but there are
other so called senior journalists working for big media groups of Lahore
who are on he payroll of Musharraf-Zardari’s henchman.” A source working in
    a TV channel disclosed today.

The source while commenting on appointment of Salman Ghani as Editor of
upcoming Dunya newspaper said: “Mian Amir does it to save his corruption and
his activities as one of the lead land mafia of Lahore but the question is
why these “senior” journalists mortgaged their conscience for money to such
shady characters who make no difference between halal and haram while
    amassing wealth?”

Isn’t it the duty of the journalists to expose such shady characters instead
of getting money from them under the table while working for some other
newspapers? Why else then Salman Ghani would appear in Dunya tv morning show
on daily basis when he was was a permanent employee of Nawa-I-Waqt?

“It’s money that makes the mare go. These so called senior and “sharif”
journalists, who are also very close to Lahore’s “sharif” politicians must
be exposed. They must answer why we they on the payroll of a politician
while working for an independent newspaper? And why such journalists play a
go-between Mian Amir and Nawaz Sharif? Or has Mian Amir hired a known
polished of “sharifs” to save his skin after Zardari’s is in trouble?” He
    expressed.

The source further claimed that Dunya TV is still failed to obtain
declaration for the newspaper and now Mian Amir has assigned special task to
Nasim Zehra, Director News who with the support of Rauf Klasra and Sami
Ibrahim is reportedly trying to snatch the declaration of already-publishing

  6. Dunya TV anchor and producers facing murder case over a girl issue
    MAY 15, 2011 . 5 COMMENTS
    in News
An anchor and two producers of Dunya TV are facing a ”murder” case over an issue of a girl.

According to an FIR registered with the Defence Police Lahore, Dunya TV anchor Rehman Azhar, producers – Zeeshan and Zagham Abbas – on their car LEB-5224 and LEC-2808 – chased another car LZU-7241 and intercepted it near the Lahore Grammar School Defence Housing Authority on last Saturday.

“They got off the cars and started teasing two women – Mariam and her daughter -who were going along with their driver Safdar Ali to their house in U block, DHA. The media persons who were drunk started teasing the women.

Meanwhile, Mariam had called her husband Ijaz Ahmed Awan who along with his son reached there,” the FIR says.

Ijaz and his son exchanged harsh words with the drunken guys over the matter which led a scuffle between them. “Azhar took out a baseball bat from his car and tried to hit Awan and his son, however, Azhar ended up hitting the bat in the head of Awan’s family driver Safdar Ali when he tried so save his owner from him,” the FIR says adding the three media persons did not allow Awan and the other family members to shift the injured to hospital and the excessive bleeding caused his death.

DHA police station invesyigation official Abdur Rehman said the media persons when arrested were misbehaving with police and threatened them of dire consequences. He said had the accused allowed the injured to shift him hospital his life might have been saved.

He said they were remanded in police custody for the six-day physical remand. He said Safdar had left behind a widow and nine children. Awan is the complainant of the case which is registered against the accused under section 302 of the Pakistan Penal Code. He said it appeared that one of the media persons knew the girl.

A senior police officer told PoliticizingPakistan that a TV Channel owner was using his influence to bail out the accused. He said the accused were forcing the family to pardon them and in return receive Rs. one million.

  7. 11 Sep 2002LAHORE: Amir backs PML-QA in violation of LG laws

    By Intikhab Hanif

LAHORE, Sept 10: The Punjab government, it seems, has turned a blind eye to the activities of Lahore district Nazim Mian Amir Mahmood who is campaigning aggressively for the PML-QA.

Though Mian Amir has never tried to conceal his affiliation with the ‘King’s party’, he demonstrated it openly at the time of the by-election of the Ravi Town Nazim. The seat had fallen vacant after the murder of the PML-N’s Aftab Asghar Dar in July.

He openly supported PML-QA candidate Qaiser Amin Butt, who was elected, and attended his election meetings, seeking vote for him.

His support for the party became more open with the announcement of the general elections. Even the instructions by the president to all the provincial governors to remain impartial during the election appear to have no effect on him. He has been showing his partiality in public meetings and press statements.

On some occasions reporters had asked him about his conduct and he had always replied that only the local governments were the non-political institutions and not the people sitting in them.

He spoke at the first public gathering of the party which its head Mian Azhar had held at his Santnagar residence and since then there is no stopping him.

He even sought vote for people he is supporting at a public meeting also addressed by Governor Khalid Maqbool in Gajjumatta on the Ferozepur Road where he launched the Lahore Ring Road project. However, the governor has conveniently ignored the violation.

Mian Amir addressed PML-QA meetings even at the Muslim League House which were presided over by Mian Azhar. On Tuesday, he announced opening of a girls college at Shahdara from where Mian Azhar is contesting election to a National Assembly seat.

A Press release issued by Mian Amer’s office says he has told his officers to prepare a plan to lay a tough-tile pavement for pedestrians who enter Lahore from Shahdara.

The area had earlier attracted his attention during the election of Qaiser Butt. He paid several visits to the area to ensure implementation of development projects there.

WARNING: Mian Amir is indulging in political activities despite the provincial local government minister’s warning that any Nazim taking part in any political activity is liable to be dismissed. At a press conference two months ago, minister Hamid Saeed had stated that under the local government law Nazims had given an undertaking that they did not belong to any political party and that they would not take part in any political activity.

Theoretically, Amir does not belong to any political party as required by the local government law. He was elected first Nazim of the Lahore district last year. Despite the fact that the elections were held on non-party basis, almost all political parties had fielded their candidates in the elections. He was the nominee of the PML-QA which was called the PML like-minded at that time.

The newly-introduced local government laws also bar Nazims from indulging in political activities.

This restriction has been imposed on the Nazims because they are supposed to act as administrative heads of the district in place of the defunct deputy commissioners. They are supposed to remain impartial while dealing with the affairs in their respective areas of jurisdiction.

Being a Nazim, Mian Amir has the powers to impose Section 144 to disallow any activity considered unwarranted by the government, to approve development projects, allocate funds for them, and, above all, grant permission to the parties to hold public meetings at specified places.

  8. physical Harassment aganist Maheen Usmani at Dunya TV

By Sabahat Ghazal A senior anchorperson at Dunya TV News is being pressured to keep silent about being physical harassed by the company’s managing director. After the news director and chief executive officer (CEO) of the company were informed the journalist started to experience serious professional setbacks, and though internal investigation committees were set up (after her resignation), these appear to have been intentionally delayed.

There are concerns that the power of the media house explains the lack of action by civil and political groups, including the National Press Club, in the case so far. The victim currently faces two defamation suits. The case is timely, since a proposal to
increase the punishment for sexual harassment in the workplace is
    pending in Parliament.

Ms Maheen Usmani was a senior anchorperson at Dunya TV News, a private television channel in Islamabad. On 11 May 2009 she received two late-night calls from the channel’s managing director, Mr. Yusuf Baig Mirza. He allegedly asked Ms. Usmani to confirm her cell number and made inappropriate comments on her appearance, before offering her certain favours and reimbursements if she were to keep in touch with him on his personal number. According to the victim’s later letter to the Director of Human Resources of Dunya News after the event, Mirza’s speech was ’suggestive’ and loaded with innuendoes.

Usmani reported the matter to the Director of News (DN), who assured her that it would not happen again and guaranteed an apology from Mirza. However the DN left his job soon afterward and this never happened. The CEO, Mr. Mian Amer Mahmood (former Nazim or Mayor of Lahore city) was also told about the incident, yet did nothing.

    Instead Usmani found herself increasingly marginalised in the studio;
Mirza withheld a special report she prepared, removed her from her
lead production role in a popular weekly program and intervened to
prevent the program’s broadcast on several occasions.

Usmani tendered her resignation on 15 June citing the ‘continued
harassment, coercion and highly unethical conduct of the top
    management of Dunya News’.

The management quickly formed a Harassment and Gender Equality
Committee to investigate her complaint, yet it was made mostly of
junior staff who reported to Mirza. The Director of Current Affairs (Ms. Nasim Zehra) and head of the committee tried unsuccessfully to get colleagues to sign a petition, barring Usmani from the office for ‘hurt(ing) the sentiments of the Dunya team’. The committee has since made little progress.

    Maheen Usmani Letter

A female correspondent of Dunya News, Maheen Usmani has recently resigned on protest of Sexual Harassment by Managing Director Yousuf Baig Mirza. Attached is her resignation letter address to the HR department.

    Dear Director Human Resources,

It was with great expectations and high hopes that I became part of Dunya’s launch team in November 2008, and I took great pride in being part of Dunya ‘family’ as it climbed the ladder of success and gave tough competition to leading channels. Seven months later, it is with great regret that I have decided to tender my resignation as the circumstances have forced me to leave this organization due to the continued harassment, coercion and highly unethical conduct of the top management of Dunya News.

Now it has become unbearable to work here as the situation has increasingly turned out to be insecure, rather punishing, for professional female journalists who want to work, as well as, protect their self-respect. I have waited with patience since May 11, 2009 that the Managing Director of Dunya News, Yousaf Beg Mirza, would stop abusing his official position and put an end to his ugly tactics of harassing a senior female journalist working here. I, however, was totally disappointed with this organization when I realized that Mr Mirza’s employer, CEO and the owner of this news channel, is not interested in protecting the female employees from the advances of the MD but is in connivance with him.

It was shocking to know that Mr Mirza is being shielded by the CEO of the organization, Mian Amer Mahmood, who was told about Mr Mirza’s indecent advances but he did not stop the MD from abusing his authority. Once it was brought to his notice, Mr Mahmood had given the assurances that no such harassment would take place but not only that this harassment continued, the CEO instead of empowering the Director News or respective Bureau Chiefs, gave the MD more powers to interact directly with the reporters who already felt harassed by him.

This all started on May 11th, 2009 at 10:01 p.m., when I received a call from one of the staff members of the Managing Director, Yousaf Beg Mirza, aka YBM, to confirm my cell number. This was followed by another call at 10:07 p.m., made by the MD. During that phone call, which continued for few minutes, his suggestive talk was loathed with innuendoes, and offers as he counted the expected benefits that a less-important, bureau-reporter can get in return for keeping a direct “contact” with the Managing Director on his “personal number.”

I was shocked to hear the “friendly” MD, who had been denying the contractual rights of male staff members all these months despite repeated reminders, going out of his way to oblige a female staff member. I have worked with country’s best media organizations during my career and never faced such an ugly situation.

Finding the whole monologue, which continued for few minutes, detestable, I immediately brought the matter to the notice of Director News because he was the one who had hired us assuring that our rights will be protected in this organization, which had developed an unsavory standing in the media industry and we also had our reservations about the reputation of the MD before joining it.

I had decided to resign then but the DN asked me to withhold it and let him talk to the MD first. The DN took up this issue with the MD who apologized with the DN over this incident and said he would seek apology from me as well in the presence of the DN.

The DN assured me that such an incident would not happen again and the MD would make an apology to me as well.

However, with the sudden departure of the DN, the situation took the worst turn and the MD found an opportunity to revenge, and hence re-launched his harassment campaign. This was going to happen despite CEO, Mian Amer Mahmood’s, assurances and promises to the outgoing DN that no member of his team would either be thrown out or be harassed by the MD.

Since the CEO was informed of MD’s harassing tactics, Mr Mahmood repeatedly reassured the former DN that no female employee would be harassed by YBM. “Humaray employees hamaray bachon ki tarah hain. Hum un ko protect kartain hain,” were the words which the former DN quoted me as the CEO had told him. Hearing these lofty words, I took a sigh of relief that my life and respect would be protected in this organization but what I forgot was that I was not their own daughter.

What they forgot was that despite their discriminatory tactics, before Allah all daughters are equal. Ayat 195 of Sura Aal-Imran says: “I never let go waste the labor of anyone that works among you, whether male or female, for in my sight all of you are alike.”

Instead of reining in the MD, the CEO gave him an open hand and the MD immediately embarked on a campaign to place obstacles in my path. He insisted on personally scrutinizing a special assignment report of mine in Islamabad instead of previewing it in Lahore. After previewing the report, and throwing his weight around in the Islamabad office, he ordered to withhold it on frivolous grounds.

I did not comply, because the changes were devoid of logic and reason. I had done extensive research for my project and the MD had been unaware of the historical context of Sri Lankan conflict which was not surprising since he is not a journalist, and reasons of his survival in Pakistani media, particularly during former military dictator Musharraf’s era, were other than professional. The bottom line is that the package has been dumped in Lahore, because of the MD’s intransigence and my refusal to “contact” him.

I have been associated for a long time with ‘Meri Dharti Meri Dunya,’ a weekly landmark program of Dunya, which has proved its popularity by garnering commercials, and a wide viewership. On the rating chart the program has been going from strength to strength and at times it registered a much higher rating than any other Current Affairs program of Dunya News and that too without any extra investment of the company.

Due to this huge success, the program got commercials and sponsorship of multinational companies which had also asked for increase in the frequency of the program and to be made it twice-weekly.

Unfortunately, my association with ‘Meri Dharti Meri Dunyai’ has proved to be its death knell, because the MD has set out to destroy this program to teach me a lesson. What he forgot, however, is that he was trying to mess with a credible senior journalist and not one of those female opportunists, who are masquerading as journalists and are being heavily promoted for the last few days on Dunya News.

On 18th May, 2009 I was symbolically put in charge of the program’s production in Islamabad just to streamline the links, their quality and better coordination with the head office. Consequently, we had tried to introduce some innovation in the production and script which got us excellent feedback. However, on 1st June, 2009 the MD forced all concerned working under him to issue another notification and remove me as Production Incharge. But no reason was given for the abrupt and irrational change.

In the next few days, Meri Dharti Meri Dunya’s repeat slot was repeatedly taken away and given to Current Affairs programs which have their own fixed slots as well. On June 1st, Meri Dharti Meri Dunya’s producers were suddenly told at 5:30 p.m., by the Transmission Incharge that the program would not be aired that day at its scheduled and publicized time slot of 7:05 p.m., and it was being replaced by a ‘documentary’. When the producer protested at the sudden axing of the program, he was told that the orders had come directly from the CEO. When the ‘documentary’ aired, we were shocked to see the program ‘One 2 One’ which has its own time slot. Again no reason was given for this unexpected change in schedule.

We were informed that this episode of Meri Dharti Meri Dunya would air next Monday. Two days later, on Wednesday, June 3rd, the Transmission Incharge informed Meri Dharti Meri Dunya’s producers at 6:30 p.m., that the program would be going on air in 30 minutes at 7:00 p.m., instead of the scheduled sports program. The producers protested at this arbitrary and unfair treatment being meted out to Meri Dharti Meri Dunya once again, but were told that the MD had issued the orders.

This was being done despite the fact that a day earlier an announcement was made that President Zardari, Richard Holbrooke and Shah Mahmood Qureshi would address a press conference which would go live at the same time.

Having no choice in the matter, the puzzled producers readied the program and it went on air at 7:05 p.m. Barely 15 minutes later, the program was trashed to live broadcast the scheduled press conference. Instead of spoiling their sports program or airing a 10 minutes bulletin as a filler as is the norm, Meri Dharti Meri Dunya was selected as the sacrificial goat once again.

On 5th June, the CEO, Mian Amer Mahmood, held a meeting with the Islamabad Bureau and when his attention was drawn to the unfair and discriminatory treatment being meted out to Dunya News’ most popular program he was unable to provide any justification for such unprofessional behavior. He did concede that Meri Dharti Meri Dunya had extremely good ratings, and said that the program’s timing was being changed ‘to improve its production value.’

Is the CEO not aware that such distortion of the program has a negative impact on the channel’s credibility, not to mention its marketing value? Despite the Islamabad meeting of June 5th chaired by the CEO, nothing improved for Meri Dharti Meri Dunya and it continued to suffer the wrath of the top management.

On June 10th, the most popular program of Dunya News was once again used as a filler when it was aired at 4:05 a.m. This time it was used to fill Ayla Malik’s program’s repeat slot as the management preferred to withhold her show due to the bomb blast in PC Peshawar earlier in the night of June 9. It was surprising as Meri Dharti Meri Dunya was not repeated during its scheduled time-slot on June 9.

Same day on June 10th, Meri Dharti Meri Dunya was chopped to 20/25 minutes duration and was once again aired, without any prior announcement, at 2:20 p.m.—again as a filler in place of Ms Malik’s show. Feeling disturbed over the situation, I separated myself from the program and told the producers last week that I will not be available for the next episode.

My colleagues are perplexed and keep asking me why a successful program is being systematically destroyed to the detriment of the channel. I owe them the truth and they must know why it is happening.

The reason is self evident—a personal vendetta of the MD against me for not “contacting” him, and which is being aided and abetted by the CEO. The very same CEO, who starts every meeting with a recitation from the Holy Quran and who keeps instructing us to speak the truth and not be corrupt, has given the MD his blessings and sanction to harass a female employee just because she won’t compromise on her principles.

I advise the CEO to refer to Ayat 124 of Sura Al-Nisa: “And those who do good deeds, whether men or women, provided that they are believers, will enter into paradise and they will not be deprived in the least of their rightful rewards.”

When I was hesitant to face an elderly employee at Dunya News who had spoken to me in a vulgar manner a few months ago, Director Current Affairs, Nasim Zehra, had advised me to be brave and “look him in the eye.” Because, Ms Zehra said, he was the one who had stepped out of line. She asked why female employees were so reluctant to speak out and adhered to a conspiracy of silence when in fact there should be a policy of zero tolerance against such creeps. She said that “our” silence encouraged such sleazy elements to continue their sexual harassment.

Her advice made sense to me then and now it gives me the motivation and courage to look the senior management in the eye and ask them: Does this policy of zero tolerance not apply to them?

Journalists fight for the rights of others, but how can we do that when our own rights are not protected and are trampled upon at will by sleazy characters? As a professional journalist, I am shocked at the unethical conduct of these people and their ability to stoop so low. How can they preach to viewers and their employees to speak the truth and behave according to the Quran and Sunnah when they themselves are mired in dubious practices and sleazy behavior in clear violation of the Quranic injunctions?

To them I can only quote the punch line of a promo being aired by Dunya News: “Khuda Sey Daro.” What you sow for others’ daughters, you will reap yourself one day.

During the last few days, I have been thinking a lot on this issue and have ultimately decided not to fall prey to this conspiracy of silence and should take a public stand to expose such shady individuals plaguing the media. This will also put Nasim Zehra’s words to test. I will wait for her to stand up in this cause with me and support a fellow female journalist in exposing such elements and help protect the collective respect of working women.

Under the influence of his desire and powerful position, the MD completely ignored the fact that such an insidious campaign would only destroy the image of the organization, and it would force those seasoned journalists to leave who value their noble professional ethics much more than anything else.

In an effort to improve the legislation to protect women at work places and create awareness about malpractices in Pakistan’s media industry, I am forwarding this resignation to few powerful women of Pakistan such as Speaker National Assembly Dr Fehmida Mirza, former Minister of Information Sherry Rehman, President’s Adviser/spokesperson Farahnaz Isphani, Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry, national, international media and rights organizations Chairman PEMRA Mushtaque Malik,, Minister for Information Qamruzzaman Kaira, Secretary Information Ashfaque Gondal, and other relevant civil and military institutions dealing with the media.

I am also reporting this to Lord Khalid Hameed, Member House of Lords, British Parliament, Chaudhry Mohammad Sarwar, Member House of Commons, British Parliament, Asma Jehangir, Special Rapporteur of the UN Commission for Human Rights, Renate Schroeder, Director International Federation of Journalists, Brussels, and I. A. Rehman, Chairman Human Rights Commission of Pakistan.

I would like to express my appreciation for my colleagues, the Assignment Desk, the cameramen, and the NLEs who I have had the privilege of working with and knowing during my association with Dunya News. I will miss all of you and our camaraderie, but I would rather be jobless than to continue working for a channel headed by such morally corrupt media barons who treat women in such a cheap manner which is repugnant for any self respecting female. It’s time to root out such people, because they give the media a bad name due to their disgusting and lewd behavior.

  9. What happened was that at the finishing of the concert, the girls got wild after the singer and they rushed towards Atif Aslam for autograph. Some of them got wilder enough to throw their mobile numbers and flying kisses towards Atif, in the same pretext the security guards trying to protect the singer from girls carried out light baton charge. Lots of girls got hit with this baton charging, at the same time the light went out and the hoax of bomb being going to explode was aired and it turned this concert into stampede. The college administration opened the small gate and the girls started moving out, moreover lots of eve teasers were standing at the small gate of the college who were trying to move in; and as the small gate opened they rushed in. The girls were coming out, boys were moving in and it was dark, the girls tried to move away from eve teasers but eve teasers went wild to saw so many girls pouring out, they touched every girls body parts what they like, and snatched purses and mobile phone from the girls, they even torn off clothes of the female students leaving them naked or partially naked. The girls were running around and lots of them got injured and many got kidnapped apart from leaving three girls dead. It was a clear cut example of an illiterate nation action and not a literate one. It looks like that lot of sheep were imprisoned against a bunch of wolves; instead of a Muslim community. The comments of a girl who was in the concert are also placed here to know how it went through.
I was there in the concert which was totally against the expectations. The girls went wild seeing Atif Aslam and one can’t believe that these are Muslim Pakistani gals. The dresses, dance and language they are using in hooting were very very very vulgar. The gals totally changed their attitude while in concert and threw cell no’s and flying kisses towards Atif and on -duty male staff. Stampede is also the result of rushing to touch Atif’s body——-what a nation—-at the exit, boys abused and touched every part of gals they wanted—shame
Another girl who was there in the concert says
yeah man i heard it too.. and its fact … hmare chairman n iss bat ko daba liya hai … em punjabian too nd ma b os concert ma thi .. ma b injured hui hun i knw wahan kitna janwaroon jesa behav kiya ja raha tha .. khuda hadayat dy

  10. I am a student at university of sargodha and once we heard the news of the incident, it was really shocking. One of our teacher attended this concert and he told us that it was all preplanned. Lots of girls rushed towards atif aslam, there was lots of noise of hooting and girls were wild on atif. At the same time the light went out and the boys rushed from the small gate into the premises, they torn off the clothes of the females students leaving lots of them completely naked. It was like animals in a barn, the muslim society and muslim country was all JHOOT. The incident further took a turn once there was a bomb hoax which resulted into stempede and some girls got killed and in the same pretext some got injured and according to some got kidnapped, if someone say i send my sister to this kind of institution then i must say Sorry, she should be illitrate better than educated like this very shameful act.

  11. The bowl shaped open air Alhamra Cultural Complex was packed to capacity on Monday night. The concert was scheduled to end at 9 pm but it went on beyond that time. There was no police or Alhamra security inside where guards employed by Punjab Group of Colleges were taking care of the security.
When the concert ended, dozens of girls tried to approach Aslam for his autograph and were pushed back to make way for him. According to Punjab Group of Colleges administration officials, when Aslam left, one of the gates was opened for the girls to exit. When some of them had reached the main gate which is few dozen yards away from the Cultural Complex, some boys passing by claimed that a bomb had been planted at the concert venue. Some girls then rushed back believing the bomb was planted near the main gate. Meanwhile, those in the theater tried to hurry out. Some girls fell down in the melee. Three girls died in the stampede while several others were injured.
The administration, Alhamra officials and police all agree that one gate was opened for the girls to exit, however, the college administration and police differ on the number of students present at the time. “The event was only for the girls of Punjab Group of Colleges. The capacity of the Complex is around 4,500 but there were around 7,000 girls inside,” an official of Cultural Complex said. DIG Operations Ghulam Mahmood Dogar also confirmed that there were around 7,000 people inside.
Punjab Group of Colleges Public Relations Officer Tahira Qasim said there were around 3, 000 students. “We organise such events every year. On Monday it was for the girls only. No untoward incident has ever taken place. This is unfortunate. We have cancelled all our scheduled concerts and programmes,” she told The Express Tribune. She added that the loss was irreplaceable but the colleges would compensate the families.
Punjab Group of Colleges Campus 8 Principal Agha Tahir Ijaz said that two of the deceased were BCom students while one was in intermediate. “We are in touch with the families. None of them has initiated any legal action against us,” he maintained.
The police have registered a case under Sections 322 (whoever without any intention causes harm to another) and 337 (whoever does an act with the knowledge that it is likely to cause harm) of the Pakistan Penal Code in Gulberg Police Station. Ten people including security-in charge Major (retd) Saleem, his assistant Subedar Iqbal and eight guards of the college have been arrested. The principal has been nominated in the FIR, however, he hasn’t been arrested.

  12. Appendix:

As Atif Aslam, Annie, Arif Lohar and Papu Sain concluded their performance, the audience, which the Alhamra authorities claimed to be around 7,000, (all girls) rushed out from the main exit, Gate No 1, causing a clog at the point. There are different speculations on the cause of the stampede, but the
Alhamra administration claims that there was no bomb hoax and that it was a result of the mismanagement of the security guards brought by the college administration.
Alhamra Open Air Executive Director Mohammad Ali Baloch told Pakistan Today said the incident took place outside the vicinity of Alhamra, giving a vivid idea that the Alhamra administration had very little to do with the horrifying incident. An official of Alhamra, while requesting anonymity, revealed that the capacity of the open air complex was around 5,000 but the college had invited almost 7,000 female students.
Baloch said they had all documents, including the undertaking from the college administration taking responsibility of any unforeseen incident. He said they even had NOCs from the DCO Ahad Cheema and the Excise Department allowing the event. “The college administration said they would bring in their own security,” Baloch said, adding that the college administration brought around 80 guards to cater 7,000 students.
“The incident turned gruesome when our chief guard Ata Mohammad tried opening the main gate to let the crowd out, but the guards accompanied by the college resisted and closed down the main gate, allowing only a narrow passage to the huge crowd,” Baloch added. “Resultantly, the girls in front were pushed down and crushed by the massive crowd coming from behind.”
Surprisingly, an event arranged by the same college had also gone in 2006, where a group of male students were brutally injured as the wall of Alhamra stairs broke and the students tumbled down along with the wall.
Mohammad Maqbool, the father of one of the deceased Ayesha Maqbool a student of ICOM at the college’s Gulberg Branch, openly blames the college administration. He said he called his younger daughter, accompanying Ayesha, who informed them that she could not find Ayesha. Maqbool said they started looking for her in different hospitals but failed to recognise her amongst the dead.
“My sons finally recognized Ayesha”, he said.
The father openly holds the college responsible for the incident. “If they were not able to cater such a huge crowd why did they try to stuff so many girls in one complex,” said Maqbool.
