“Shias = Iranian agents”: Ahmed Rashid’s dangerous stereotypes may enable further Shia genocide!

by admin

Ahmed Rashid's false stereotypes about Shias may further enable their massacres in Pakistan, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia and other countries.

In his most recent interview (21 March 2012) with Fresh Air’s Terry Gross, Ahmed Rashis recycles and reinforces an extremely dangerous stereotype of Shia Muslims in the Middle East and throughout the world, i.e., Shia Muslims are stooges and agents of Iranian mullah-regime. This stereotype has been frequently used by Arab dictators in the Middle East, Jihadi-sectarian groups (Al Qaeda, Taliban, Sipah-e-Sahaba, Ikhwan-al-Muslimoon etc) in Arab and non-Arab countries to persecute or/and massacre innocent Shia Muslims.

Lately, Ahmed Rashid’s narrative is a reflection of the 80-20

Daily Ummat’s ISI-ASWJ inspired propaganda against Shias of Gilgit-Baltisan

Are Ismailis of Gilgit-Baltistan contriving for their own State in Pakistan?

A Karachi based Islamist tabloid ‘Daily Ummat’— through one of its most dishonest reports— has squarely levelled the residents of Gilgit-Baltistanwith some serious blows of allegations that, if unattended, would bump the genuine efforts to relinquish the terror factor in the region. The news

The Nation’s editorial terms ban on SSP-ASWJ terrorists as unjust

by admin

Pakistan’s Nawaiwaqt Media Group is long known for its affiliation with the right-wing, particularly with PML-N. Its two main newspapers (Nawaiwaqt – Urdu and The Nation – English) and TV channel (Waqt News) are known for routinely publishing pro-Jihadi, pro-army, anti-democracy and anti-West propaganda on behalf of the ISI.

Several of Nawaiwaqt’s present and former editors, particularly Majid Nizami, Dr. Shirin Mazari and Saleem Bokhari are known loyalists of Pakistan army.

Amongst the aforementioned three names, Salim Bokhari is rather dubious because he is not only

The Friday Times misrepresents the suffering of Pakistan’s Shias and Ahmadis

by admin

We are very disappointed to see misrepresentation of Shia genocide in Pakistan in at least four articles in the current issue of The Friday Times (March 02-08, 2012 – Vol. XXIV, No. 03).

Clearly, authors and editors at TFT have taken lead from their Editor in Chief Najam Sethi who himself was found misrepresenting Shia genocide in Pakistan only a few days ago on Geo TV’s Aapas Ki Baat (Talk Show). The details can be read at the following link: http://criticalppp.com/archives/73439

In addition to misinterpreting and misrepresenting the anti-Ahmadiyya legislation at least in one article by Raza Rumi (discussed next), TFT also published a misleading piece

Jang Group (The News) retracts its ISI-inspired report on Haideri Taliban

Pakistan Blogzine was a part of a recent effort along with Shia activists and other rights activists in highlighting the Jang Group’s unprofessional and malicious conduct in publishing an ISI-inspired report about an imaginary Shia terrorist group namely Haideri Taliban or Mehi Militia.

We are pleased to report that as an outcome of our collective efforts, Jang Group (The News) has retracted the news item and published and apology.

Dear Express Tribune, they are Shia too! – by Mustafa

While it is certainly commendable that Express Tribune (ET) has reported the protest demo organized by the youth of Parachinar, time when majority of the news outlets have with blithe disregard ignored it (as usual, for example this largest protest against target killing of Shias was blacked out by Pakistani media: criticalppp.com/archives/72401), the reporter, or perhaps the editor of ET needs to be reminded that the people of Parachinar are Shia too! Tazeen Javed supports Najam Sethi: A racist defending another racist?

Her article in Express Tribune is an example of dishonest journalism

For an example of biased, dishonest journalism, read Pakistan blogger Tazeen Javed’s op-ed in Express Tribune in defence of Najam Sethi’s racist tweets: “Calling out the real bullies”

The article is an unsuccessful attempt by the Najam Sethi fan-club to repair Sethi’s unrepairable image.

In her article, Tazeen did not mention Sethi’s habit of passing casual racist remarks. Previously it was Pashtuns, now it is Jews, next Hazaras perhaps?

On Rezaul Hasan Laskar’s dubious reporting from Pakistan

Embedded in the narratives of Pakistan's military establishment and urban elite

Update: After critical comments by Laibaah, Mr. Rezaul Hasan Laskar was a part of an ugly campaign to get her account banned on Twitter.

Rezhasan Rezaul Hasan Laskar
Dear all, this is a request: kindly report @Laibaah as spam to #Twitter. her latest tweet describes me as spox “of ISI and Taliban”. folks i think it’s about that time when we should seriously think of reporting @Laibaah as spam to #Twitter. I’m going to start.

https://pakistanblogzine.wordpress.com/2011/09/28/fourth-suspension-of-laibaahs-twitter-account-by-almadar-mengal/

Will Mr. Laskar agree with the silencing of his own voice from Twitter or media only because some of his readers may not agree with his reports and narratives? A media person must never be a part of a campaign to curb free speech.

********

Critical readers of Pakistani and international media are aware of how certain foreign correspondents based in Pakistan are carefully sucked into pro-military establishment narratives by a tight network of urban (seemingly liberal) writers and activists, who remain very soft on Pakistan army/ISI while very harsh on politicians and the civilian government.

Dawn: A “cracker” of a job confusing the public with euphemisms – by Qudsia Siddiqui

by admin

Attack on Shia students in Karachi: An ISI-Sipah-e-Sahaba production

After receiving the news of the blast at Karachi University, I quickly checked the news coverage including the “Breaking News” section of DAWN.

Here is how they reported it:

KARACHI: A blast reported at the University of Karachi on Tuesday was probably caused by a firecracker, police said.

“It was a low intensity blast and was caused most likely by a cracker,” Karachi police chief Fayyaz Leghari told Reuters.

Leghari said three people were wounded in the incident, though a senior university official estimated at least six.

“The blast took place outside the main cafeteria of the university and at least six people were wounded,” said Kaleem Raza Khan, registrar of the University of Karachi.

This is the first such incident at an educational institution in Karachi, though the campus often sees regular, violent clashes between rival student groups.

Leghari said Tuesday’s incident may be related to these rivalries but added police were investigating.

Last year, two suicide bomb blasts at the International Islamic University in Islamabad killed six people, including the bombers, and wounded at least 20.”(Source)

Reading this report, one would get the impression that this is simply a fire cracker accident that injured six university students. I wonder, was this some festival that they were celebrating; a belated Christmas, Jinnah day or some such sort.  Then there is a vague description of “violent clashes” between “rival student groups”

Who are these “student groups” ? Are they the dissident wings of the Bader Meinhoff or the Red Army Brigades?? “I love Miandad” vs “I worship Imran and His Holiness Chaudhary Iftikhar”.  How about MQM vs every other ethnicity of Pakistan!

The conclusion is even more interesting where a reference is made to two suicide bomb blasts at the “International Islamic University” thereby creating a causal link between that event and today’s.  Now I get it; it must be that damned “foreign hand”; that dark consortium of Jews, Hindus and Blackwater/Xe blonds, as we all know muslims can never do this and Islam had been targeted in the university blasts in Islamabad!!

Nope, as always, no details are provided. After all, that would be completely contrary to DAWN’s style of reporting; you know fudging and obfuscating facts, falsely linking two events and dishonestly presenting the sheer terror tactics of IJT and Sipah Sahaba as an equal force to its various victims.

There is NO reference to the facts that this was no fire cracker but an elaborate remote control bomb with bearings that was used to target Shias students. Ofcourse, the 20 that were injured was casually reduced to 3 and no mention was made of the fact that 2 are in serious condition.  Such insensitivity has become the norm for much of the media in reporting attacks on Shias and other minority groups and DAWN is hardly the exception.  On the contrary, its disgusting bias just shines through…

The more important context to this would have been the press conference by Shia cleric and activist outside the Press Club just days ago of the abduction of Shia youth by the ISI! Or the threatening SMSs that were sent to scores of Shias since the commencement of Muhurrum in early December.  No, such facts would hurt the reputation of DAWN as an establishment rag whose insensitivity for minorities is directly proportional to its fawning over the Judiciary and its dubious cause.

The irony of highlighting Jinnah, the SHIA founder of Pakistan, as the founder of DAWN escapes its ownership who themselves are allegedly Shia. Ingratiating themselves with the establishment is probably more lucrative for DAWN than honest journalism and caring for the plight of minorities.

Carry on DAWN, no one can do euphemisms better than you.  In doing so, you churn out the best de-contextualized reports that ensure that the establishment and its Islamofascist proxies will never be held to account for the crimes against the Pakistani people!

Dr Shahid Masood flattering Hashwani

I am pleased to announce that I will be a colleague and a co-worker with some of you very soon in my capacity of ‘CEO and President’ for an upcoming Media Group. Mr. Sadruddin Hashwani leads this consortium of giants from the Middle East and Europe.

This Group, is a Media House that will bring out quality TV channels, Dailies and Periodicals besides establishing of Media University of international standard. But honestly none of this would really have been possible, if there was not a Group behind my dream.

In the forefront of this initiative is the man leading this Global consortium, whom I must thank for his having agreed to venture in this media enterprise. Mr. Sadruddin Hashwani a name you are all familiar with. Someone we have all come to respect as a man whose patriotism makes us proud, whose resolve makes us believe more in our own selves. A role model to have risen above the rest as a self made man who now wishes to set a precedence in media, reinventing, reinvigorating and reviving our industry bogged down by lethargy.

“I must admit that this introduction to Mr. Hashwani or the international consortium is no justice. And I fail in introducing them to the hilt that they deserve an introduction, but I do intend on introducing them in more details that I shall share with all of you soon….It is history in the making, it is a hard task. And I know. I am embarking upon a journey to redefine Media History in Pakistan as we know it. Never before, had a working professional in Media could dream of being a stake holder in equity in a big Media Group before, I am to set the precedence.”

ISLAMABAD, September 16, 2009 (Balochistan Times): Top Hotelier and Chairman of Hashoo Group and Marriott Chain of hotels, Sadruddin Hashwani has termed as incorrect and baseless the impression that he was shifting abroad due to President Asif Ali Zardaris pressure. It is wrong that I am shifting abroad due to pressure of President Zardari. There is neither any pressure on me from the President nor there has been any talk between them in this connection. It may be pointed out that a couple of days back when President Zardari hosted Iftar dinner for journalists, prominent Anchorpersons Hamid Mir told the President that Sadruddin Hashwani was propagating that he left the country because of the President. The President described this impression and Propaganda as baseless. At this the President asked his staffers to connect him with Hashwani in Dubai but the staff could not succeed. Then President Zardari asked the security personnel to bring in the mobile set of Hamid Mir and asked him to get him connected with Sadruddin Hashwani. When Hashwani came on line, he informed the President that there was no truth in the report that he(Hashwani) left the country because of President Zardari. At this the President handed over the set to Hamid Mir who also spoke with Hashwani on the occasion. It may be recalled that Sadruddin Hashwani along with his family shifted to Dubai last month. During this period he had been giving impression to important political leaders and elites that he shifted abroad due to pressure from Aiwan-e-Sadr but now he is denying this impression.

Petition to The Hashwani Group

To: The Hashwani Group
HOW MUCH DOES YOUR STAY AT THE PEARL CONTINENTAL COST YOU?

Because the workers who clean the rooms, make the meals and run the hotel only get Rs. 7800 per month for nine hour shifts each day. And, when they tried to organize a union to fight for their rights, some were fired and others thrown in secret prison on false charges. 150 of them are now occupying the basement of the Pearl Continental Hotel to demand that its owners, the Hashwani Group, abide by the law. This is following an attempt by the PC to fire four workers, all union activists. Food has become scarce while they have been on strike and management has refused to allow outside deliveries to be made.

The current Human Resources Director at the PC is a retired Major Zia Jan who came to the PC after busting a union at the Karachi Electric Supply Company (KESC). Major Zia recently told the striking workers that they ought to be ashamed of themselves for fighting the PC.

The workers are being filmed and monitored by security. They are afraid that they will soon be subject to Ranger or police brutality. The families of the workers who protested outside the hotel in solidarity have already been baton-charged by the police.

We, the undersigned, demand that the PC Hotel abide by the law and accept the workers’ demands, which are as follows:

1. GIVE US OUR JOBS BACK!

Firing of union activists while negotiations are ongoing is illegal.

2. RECOGNIZE OUR UNION!

The courts already do. It’s time for the PC to abide by the law.

3. COME TO THE NEGOTIATING TABLE!

The PC refuses to negotiate the charter of demands. The 2002 and 2006 demands are still pending.

For more details and updates as they become available, please see: http://progpak.wordpress.com/2010/03/08/pc-workers-occupation/

Report: U.S. Planned to Buy Bombed Peshawar Hotel

By ROBERT MACKEY

June 9, 2009, 6:41 PM

Source: NYT

Pakistan’s Geo TV aired security camera video showing how the attackers struck the Pearl Continental hotel in Peshawar, Pakistan on Tuesday. After armed militants fired at security guards, a car and a truck loaded with explosives sped towards the hotel. In the bright flash after the explosion, the militants could be seen at the perimeter of the complex.

As a colleague here at The Times points out, the Pearl Continental hotel in Peshawar, Pakistan, which was partly destroyed on Tuesday by a massive car bomb, is well known locally as a meeting point for not just wealthy Pakistanis, foreign aid workers and journalists but also intelligence agents. In other words, it is the sort of place a modern-day Graham Greene novel might be set, with security so tight that even the lifeguards at the hotel pool are armed with AK-47s.

Given that reputation, the hotel was an obvious target for militants — even before a report surfaced two weeks ago that the United States was planning to buy the hotel as part of a plan to greatly expand its diplomatic presence in the city. As the Press Trust of India reported on Tuesday, the Pearl Continental is currently owned by Sadruddin Hashwani, who also owns the Marriott Hotel in Islamabad, which was bombed last September, resulting in more than 50 deaths.

According to a report by Saeed Shah and Warren P. Strobel of McClatchy Newspapers, the hotel was apparently at the center of an American plan to establish a long-term presence in Peshawar, the capital of Pakistan’s North-West Frontier Province:

A senior State Department official confirmed that the U.S. plan for the consulate in Peshawar involves the purchase of the luxury Pearl Continental hotel. The official spoke on the condition of anonymity because he wasn’t authorized to speak publicly. […]

Peshawar is an important station for gathering intelligence on the tribal area that surrounds the city on three sides and is a base for al Qaida and the Taliban. The area also will be a focus for expanded U.S. aid programs, and the American mission in Peshawar has already expanded from three U.S. diplomats to several dozen.

In October 2001, a report in Time magazine described how the Pearl Continental fit into the cloak-and-dagger atmosphere of Peshawar, the city “where the terrorists meet, form cells and deploy — and where access to the closed world of the Taliban begins. Bin Laden’s foot soldiers regularly slip through the walled enclaves and jostling bazaars to recruit jihadis or send out instructions. Taliban fighters float through to spy and resupply. Every Afghan faction has its representative in some dim house. Intelligence agents linger in the lobby of the Pearl Continental Hotel, where the phones are tapped and drivers let fall scraps of information.”

As with the attack on the headquarters of the Pakistani intelligence service in Lahore on May 27, the bombing on Tuesday seems to have taken place at a site that militants knew to be central to the operations of the intelligence agencies fighting to defeat them.

……….

Peshawar PC Hotel Blast: Where is Hashwani

Source: fkpolitics

Remember after the Marriott blash, Hashwani, the owner of Marriott and the PC Hotel chain in Pakistan, was all over the TV channels and his picture splashed in all the newspapers. But after last night’s blast at PC Peshawar, there is no sign of him. Curious isn’t it?

Is it because he is NOT the owner any more? Reports are PC, Peshawar was “sold” to the Americans some time back and is the center for their intelligence agencies for the whole area. It was reported by at least one channel (SAMAA TV) that the 3rd and 4th floors WERE completely under American control (just like Marriott where it was the 6th and 7th floors). Further credence is given to the report by the fact that a “tender notice” has already been issued for another PC in Peshawar (Hayatabad). Now why does a smaller city like Peshawar need TWO PC hotels when much bigger cities like Karachi and Lahore have only one?

According to that earlier report, plans were for complete take over of the current PC by the Americans in the coming days, leaving Peshawar with out one. Hence the plans for constructing a new one….

So suggesting this was “a random act of violence” is completely preposterous. PC being the “US Intelligence Headquarters” was common knowledge in Peshawar so an attack there was all but expected sooner or later. The blame for civilian deaths and injuries falls squarely on the government for allowing Americans to set up a base there despite having the example of Marriott before them.

BTW: Americans knew something was up. The following is from last week:

The advisory issued on Tuesday instructs US government personnel to cancel all travel to and from Peshawar for the next 24 hours in response to a security threat.

P.S. The story being spun by the media is that the foreigners there were all UN or NGO workers who were there to help the IDPs. Hogwash, I say. I am sure this is true of a few but I say shame on them for wasting all that money on their stay in a five-star hotel when that money could be better spent on the IDPs.

UPDATE #1:
Hashwani has finally shown up talking tough and claiming: “Despite the losses, I will make the (Pearl Continental) operational in two months just as I reopened the Marriott in three months.” Well, sure he “reopened” Marriott but I am told no one goes there (except his old clients ;-) perhaps.) The same will be the case will this one. Only foreigners will be there and it will continue to be a target. Wonder just how much bigger the “no-go area” would be around the hotel now. Kind of kills the will to go there anyways. So I guess the new owners will have it all to themselves sooner than planned. Or was this the plan in the first place?? ;-)

(I still believe Hashwani has handed it over to the Americans and they “own” it, just like they own him….)

Update #2:
Well, here is where most of the money for rebuilding PC is going to be coming from:
US to spend $1 billion on embassy expansions in Pakistan, Afghanistan
But more significant is this bit from the story that confirms what i have been saying:

BUYING THE PEARL IN PESHAWAR

A senior State Department official confirmed that the US plan for the consulate in Peshawar involves the purchase of the luxury Pearl Continental hotel. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he wasn’t authorized to speak publicly.

The Pearl Contintental is the city’s only five-star hotel, set in its own expansive grounds, with a swimming pool. It’s owned by Pakistani tycoon Sadruddin Hashwani.

Peshawar is an important station for gathering intelligence on the tribal area that surrounds the city on three sides and is a base for Al Qaeda and the Taliban. The area also will be a focus for expanded US aid programs, and the American mission in Peshawar has already expanded from three US diplomats to several dozen.

In all, the administration requested $806 million for diplomatic construction and security in Pakistan.

“For the strong commitment the US is making in the country of Pakistan, we need the necessary platform to fulfill our diplomatic mission,” said Jonathan Blyth of the State Department’s Overseas Buildings Operations bureau. “The embassy is in need of upgrading and expansion to meet our future mission requirements.”

A senior Pakistani official said the expansion has been under discussion for three years. “Pakistanis understand the need for having diplomatic missions expanding and the Americans always have had an enclave in Islamabad,” said the official, who requested anonymity, because he wasn’t authorized to discuss the matter publicly. “Will some people exploit it? They will.”

Any doubts??? :)

Note: DO pay special attention to the statements:
$736 million to build a new US embassy in Islamabad…The scale of the projects rivals the giant US Embassy in Baghdad, which was completed last year after construction delays at a cost of $740 million.”
AND
“The embassy is in need of upgrading and expansion to meet our future mission requirements.”

So you know what’s coming….

And this DOES CONFIRM the statement made by me earlier i.e. that:

  • PC HAD ALREADY BEEN SOLD TO THE AMERICANS
  • PC IS THE HEADQUARTERS OF THE AMERICAN INTELLIGENCE OPERATIONS

So no tears here…Just applause

Benazir Bhutto’s murder: Whose narrative is Mubashir Lucman propagating? – by Shaista Aazar

by admin

Mubashir Lucman (weird spelling) is a very strange figure in term of political affiliation, his sympathies and criticism, his praise and hunt for various political figures.

He was part of General Musharraf’s interim cabinet and unlike his other friends, he still is a fan of him, he’s an admirer of MQM and its leader Altaf bhai, he also wrote in support of President Zardari and has also shown his appreciations for Benazir Bhutto.

One thing is for sure, he has utter dislike for Mian brothers of Lahore. He has shown it umpteen times, and has conducted shows with Rehmat Shah Afridi, the Frontier Post editor and shows on Mian Shahbaz Sharif’s style of administration, the police state of Punjab, the fake encounters by the Punjab police.

He also has a strange relations with the Ahl-e-Hadith scholar Ibtisam Elahi Zahir, who is the most frequent visitor of his shows.

But all these strange mixes were left behind when he invited Safdar Abbasi in his talk-show, Point Blank, via telephone.

The show was about Benazir Bhutto’s assassination, one of the most debated political murders in Pakistan’s history.

BB’s assassination tragedy has two narratives, one is the narrative of the Pakistan Peoples Party leadership and its workers, which is also shared by neutral defence and political analysts of Pakistan and the world; it was also endorsed by the UN fact finding commission via its report submitted to the UN Secretary General.

Another is the Pakistan’s military establishment’s narrative described by General Musharraf, ISPR, retired Army generals, ex-ambassadors and beaurocrats and their subsidiaries in political parties and the media.

This whole narrative revolves around the sun-roof lever of BB’s vehicle, black mercedes, BB’s Blackberry, hers will and other similar things.

Now coming back to the Point Blank, I mean Lucman’s show.

The way he was investigating the Mr Abbasi was to prove the establishment’s narrative to hold BB responsible for breaching the security by exposing herself to the shooter by appearing through the sun roof, and very weirdly blamed Mr Abbasi and others with BB in the vehicle for allowing her to appear through the sun roof.

He invited Safdar Abbasi to talk on what happened on the fateful day. Mr Abbasi was in that bulletproof Land Cruiser BB was travelling in. He described details of the whole incident. He has nothing new to tell the viewers, but his account of the whole story was missing some details and he failed to answer some questions regarding these details.

As Mr Abbasi was asked who opened the hetch of the sun-roof, he for some unknown reasons refrained to name or perhaps he forgot as he said in the programme, but the fierce anchor was running a “No Mercy” episode. He grilled him for his inability to answer the simple question. He also held him responsible for slowing down the vehicle and gathering of workers around the vehicle as Mr Abbasi was shouting slogans on the megaphone and the workers around were answering these slogans, and BB appeared through the sun-roof to laud the workers and as a result, suffered the fatal bullet injuries.

Mr Lucman was very aggressive in this whole episode. Mr Abbasi was a bit defensive, giving the impression that he was upset with Lucman’s style of grilling.

The episode as expected was liked by the audience and the TV channel decided to show carefully selected parts of it in the hourly and half hourly news bulletins the whole day, and telecasted the episode more than once. An article also appeared in the newspaper of the same media group to further propagate that narrative. A few PPP workers also liked it for its grilling of Mr Abbasi.

Mubashir vs Mubashir; What are they up to?

Another channel (TV One) in their programme, interestingly by another Mubashir (Prime Time with Rana Mubashir), provided Mr and Mrs Abbasi an opportunity to rebuild their dented image and to answer the unanswered questions. Mr and Mrs Abbasi suggested that an FIR coulkd be lodged against them if anyone has a doubt about their involvement.

Now what was the aim of this collaborated effort by the Mubashirs duo and the couple, Mr and Mrs Abbasi?

If our readers have watched the show, the target was not Mr Abbasi. The target was the UN report. The anchor repeatedly was calling it a useless practice and urging that if Mr Abbasi should be handed over to the Punjab Police to tell the whole truth. (Mr Lucman has conducted various shows on the atrocities of Punjab Police.)

In the whole episode, he did not mention the contents of UN report and the alleged involvement of the Military Intelligence and ISI. He also very foolishly blamed Mrs Naheed Khan of preventing the police from the post-mortem, ignoring a very simple fact that in criminal cases, state itself is the party and it does not need approval for any necessary steps taken, which can help the investigation. But unfortunately here the state and its spy agencies are a party, which has in fact impeded the investigation. The UN commission report has described that several obstacles and hurdles were put in their investigations.

But the macho-man, Mr Lucman carefully ignored all such aspects, and instead promoted a new conspiracy theory. Therefore, Rana Mubashir has to be brought in for ‘damage control’ because Mr and Mrs Abbasi have not yet lost their attraction for the circles who have been investing on them to be used in their anti PPP plots, although not unlike their other counterpart Mr Aitzaz Ahsan, they too have failed miserably.

An (unofficial) ISI spokesperson writes on former CIA head in Islamabad

by admin

On Ejaz Haider and his kudos to our saviours

by admin

Relatives are distressed as a man wounded in a grenade attack receives aid at a hospital in Peshawar; the attack on the eve of Ashura killed a toddler and wounded many others. PHOTO: AFP

The dominant narrative in the (ISI and JI dominated) Pakistani media is to congratulate each other, security agencies (police, rangers, army) in particular, on their ‘success’ in preventing terrorist attacks during the Ashura of Muharram.

Once against the official narrative emanates from our masters in the establishment and is uncritically recycled and propagated by their friends in Pakistan’s “free media”.

Take for example a recent op-ed by Ejaz Haider in Express Tribune (20 Dec 2010) in which he states:

kudos to those who developed and executed the multiple security plans to prevent terrorist attacks on Youm-e-Ashur. A nerve-wracking task of herculean proportions, cover as it did several cities across the country and provided security to thousands of mourners in dense areas where preventing a single person from sneaking up to a crowd and mounting a suicide attack required meticulous planning and execution to a tee and more — much more.

Not a single time in this piece, Mr Haider acknowledged nor paid tribute to those innocent Shias and Sunnis who were killed by sectarian killers of the Taliban / Sipah-e-Sahaba in Kohat, Hangu and Peshawar during the Ashura of Muharram.

This shows not only an acutely urban (Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad centric) bias of our media but also speaks of their pro-establishment tendencies.

Let’s offer a quick survey of the ‘success’ during the mourning days of Muharram:

19 Shia and Sunni Muslims massacred in Kohat
8 December 2010
1 Muharram

As usual, the ISI and JI dominated Pakistani media is distorting the fact. The Kohat attack today was clearly sectarian, aimed at a bus carrying passengers, most of them Shia but also some moderate Sunnis, who were travelling to the nearby tribal district of Orakzai, where Pakistan has encouraged displaced civilians to return after an anti-Taliban offensive.

According to daily Dawn:

A teenage suicide bomber killed 19 people at a busy Pakistani bus terminal on Wednesday, the third attack in three days as the country stepped up security for the holy month of Muharram.

The bomber blew himself up in Kohat, home to at least half a million people and one of the main garrisons for the Pakistan military, in the northwestern province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

“It was a suicide blast. The death toll has risen to 17,” Kohat police chief Dilawar Bangash told AFP, adding that 25 others were wounded, seven of them seriously. (Death toll has risen to 19: DawnNews)

Police said the bomber blew himself up at the door of a bus carrying passengers to the nearby tribal district of Orakzai, where Pakistan has encouraged displaced civilians to return after an anti-Taliban offensive.

“We have found the head and legs of the suicide bomber,” said Bangash. The bus terminal is in Tirah bazaar, the main market in the town.

The attack coincided with the start of Muharram, which traditionally sees tensions rise between Pakistan’s majority Sunni Muslim and minority Shia Muslim community.

“It is true there were more Shias killed in the attack but there were a number of Sunnis also who died in the blast. So we cannot say who was the target,” said Bangash, adding the suicide bomber was aged 15 to 16.

15 Shias massacred at Al-Zahra Hospital and Mosque in Hangu

10 December 2010
3 Muharram

A suicide bomb car bomb killed at least nine (update: 15) people in northwest Pakistan on Friday, police said, also leaving 28 others injured.

The bomb hit the main gate of the Al-Zuhra hospital and maternity center in Pass Kalay, a town in the district of Hangu, said Abdul Rashid Khan, the police chief in Hangu. The hospital and mosque cater to Shia patients and worshippers.

The blast damaged the mosque, two houses and two vehicles, he said. At least two children were killed.

Hangu sits next to Pakistan’s tribal region and is part of a region plagued by sectarian violence by extremist Deobandis and Wahhabis (Taliban / Sipah-e-Sahaba) against Shia Muslims.

The attack happened on the second day of Muhharam, one of the holiest days on the Islamic calendar, when violence and fighting is prohibited.

At least 15 people were killed and over 20 others were injured on Friday when a suicide bomber rammed his explosives-laden vehicle into an under-construction building of a hospital in northwest Pakistan, a media report said.

The commissioner of Kohat, Khalid Khan Umarzai confirmed “the suicide vehicle blast”, adding that “the authorities had received threats”.

On Wednesday, a suicide blast at a bus stand in Kohat city, a few kilometers away from Hangu, killed 16 people and injured more than 20.

Investigators said the blast, which damaged the hospital building, was a sectarian attack.

Some of the dead were identified as Khalid, Muhammad Ali, Waqar Hussain, Hikmat Ali, Zohra Bibi, Bibi Maryam and Saleem Bibi. The injured included Faizan Ali, Khalique Raza, Wajid Ali, Jaffar, Samin, Asghar, Tufail Muhammad, Ikhtiar Ali, Arsalan, Wahabul Hassan, Mohib Ali, Asghar Hussain, Gulfam Hussain, Ali Asghar and police constable Dildar Hussain.

A Shia community leader Shireen Ali Shah said they had informed the local administration about the likely terror attacks on their Imambargahs and hospitals but no security measures were taken to protect them. He alleged the blast took place due to the negligence on the part of the administration.

Grenade attack in Peshawar, 1 killed, 28 injured

16 Dec 2010
9 Muharram

A grenade attack killed one child and wounded 28 people, including women and children, at a Muharram procession Thursday on the eve of Ashura in Peshawar, reported Express 24/7 correspondent Iftikhar Firdous.

“Twenty-five injured were brought to our hospital. There are women and children among them. One child is in a serious condition,” said Abdul Hamid Afridi, head of the city’s Lady Reading Hospital.

According to Express 24/7 correspondent Omar Farooq, three of the injured, including one child, were in critical conditions when they were brought into Lady Reading Hospital.

“It was a grenade attack,” Peshawar administration chief Mohammad Siraj told AFP, adding that police had failed to arrest the culprit.

Ashura attack kill nine in Hangu: police

December 17, 2010
10 Muharram

PESHAWAR/ISLAMABAD: A mortar attack killed nine people, including women and children, in northwest Pakistan on Friday as Shia Muslims marked Ashura, the holiest day in their calendar, police said.

Mortars slammed into two houses in Hangu, a town that has been a flashpoint for sectarian clashes between Shia and Sunni Muslim communities.

They were fired from the neighbouring district of Orakzai, part of Pakistan’s semi-autonomous tribal areas with Afghanistan that Washington has branded the global headquarters of al Qaeda. “It was a sectarian attack. A total of four mortars were fired. The death toll is now nine,” Gul Jamal, a local police official said.

Several women and at least two children were among the dead. Officials said the dead included six Shias and three Sunnis. The injured were taken to a nearby hospital.

The attack occurred despite tight security measures put in place for the Islamic holy month of Muharram, which has often been marred by sectarian and militant violence against Shias. Hangu has witnessed several attacks on Shias in the past.

Suicide attack in Shikarpur
17 Dec 2010
10 Muharrram

Security forces gunned down a suspicious person who tried to enter the Ashura procession in Shikarpur along with a bag on Friday. The attacker managed to explode the grenade before he died, injuring four people, including a police official, in a village near Khanpur .

Now, let us do the unpleasant part, the body count. I consider it necessary to deconstruct the ‘success narrative’ manufactured by the GHQ and propagated by their friends in Pakistani media.

1 Muharram, Kohat, 19

3 Muharram, Hangu, 15

9 Muharram, Peshawar, 1

10 Muharram, Hangu 9

Total deaths 44

I am aware that the actual number of deaths may exceed this figure as the total number of injured persons is quite high including several critically injured.

Thus my question is, would Ejaz Haider and his likes in Pakistani media feel any shame for recycling and propagating the urban- and “state” centric lies? Will they reflect for a moment on the damage the Teen Jeem (journalists, generals and judges) have caused to this unfortunate nation?

At the end of his piece, Mr Haider becomes obsessed with the monetary costs of suicide bombing and the security arrangements. He writes:

So far we have not monetised the costs; at least my inquiries in this regard have gone mostly unanswered. The direct costs are easier to calculate, the indirect more difficult. But the exercise is worth undertaking. What is clear, however, is that the cost will continue to rise until the mindset that desires to kill remains unchanged.

How conveniently he forgot to mention that the mindset that desires to kill is not to be found in religious madrassahs or the Tribal Areas, the mindset is located within the GHQ, judiciary and the media itself, and that the associated cost has not monetary but existential implications for this remainder part (post-1971) of the land we call Pakistan.
