We welcome ban on terrorist organization Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat (ASWJ) aka Sipah-e-Sahaba Pakistan (SSP)

Pakistan’s government has issued orders banning the country’s most dangerous extremist group. Ahle Sunnah Wal Jamaat (ASWJ, previous name: Sipah-e-Sahaba Pakistan) was first banned in 2002 by then Pakistani leader Gen Pervez Musharraf.

Activists from the pro-al-Qaeda, pro-Taliban extremist Deobandi group formerly known as the Sipah-e-Sahaba (SSP), or Soldiers of the Companions of the Prophet, have been convicted of killing hundreds of Shia Muslims, Sunni Barelvi Muslims, Ahmadis and Christians.

The group is believed to have the support of Pakistan army’s intelligence agency ISI which used this group to promote its Jihadi designs in Afghanistan and FATA.

The head of the ASWJ Molvi Ludhianvi described the ban as preposterous.

Other minorities, security targets and embassies have also been targeted by members of the group.

The group has also recently been in the forefront of an alliance of extremist groups calling for an end to the country’s relationship with the US, the Defence of Pakistan Council (Difa-e-Pakistan Council).

The notification ordering the ban was issued to relevant security departments two weeks ago but no public announcement has yet been made.

The interior ministry’s order says the organisation has been banned for what it calls its “concerns in terrorism”, according to a copy of the order obtained by the BBC.

The head of the Ahle Sunnah Wal Jamaat group, Maulana Mohammad Ahmed Ludhianvi, told the BBC that the group intended to challenge the order in court.

“It’s taken us so long so rein in our activists – it will become very difficult to control their emotions if the ban is enforced,” he threatened.

The SSP has always maintained that terrorist activists joined a splinter faction of the group called Lashkar-e-Jhangvi. But security officials in Pakistan and beyond maintain that the groups are one and the same. Recently, ASWJ leader was seen addressing anti-Shia rallies with the notorious LeJ leader Malik Ishaq.

Pakistan security officials allege that beneath the guise of Lashkar-e-Jhangvi, the SSP has been behind most of the major militants attacks in Pakistan, including the assassination of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto.

The group is also said to be responsible for the continuing killing of members of the country’s oppressed communities, particularly Shia, across Pakistan.

As part of the Defence of Pakistan Council, it has held rallies in all of the country’s major cities – including Karachi, Lahore and Rawalpindi – and calling on the government to cut off all ties with the US and the West.

Although the Jamaat-ud-Dawa remains absent from the order, it appears some of the US pressure has paid off.

“American and pro-American elements are afraid of the Difa and have orchestrated this ban,” Maulana Ludhianvi says.

  1. The Ahl-e-Sunnat Wal Jamat (ASWJ) has hit back at reports of a ban imposed by the Government of Pakistan, stating that the action was being carried out on the directives of the United States.
“These attempts at banning ASWJ are on the directives of the USA,” chairperson Maulana Ahmad Ali Ludhianvi told The Express Tribune on Saturday.
Ludhianvi said, “In the last few months, we have been peacefully busy in the defence of Pakistan with the Difa-e-Pakistan rallies, so which activity of ours has been a reason for the ban.”
“Ahl-e-Sunnat is a school of thought and not an organization so we consider this as a ban on the Ahle-e-Sunnat followers.”
None of the offices of the ASWJ have been sealed by the government so far, Ludhianvi told The Express Tribune, adding that no official documentation had been sent to them and they found out about the ban via the BBC Urdu report.
The report states that a notification had been issued by the Interior Ministry two weeks ago, which said the ASWJ was suspected to have been involved in terrorism related activities. According to the notification available with the BBC, authorities in all four provinces had been alerted to the change in status.
ASWJ is a member organization of the Difa-e-Pakistan Council, which has been organising rallies across the country. The Multan DPC rally was hosted by the ASWJ and was also attended by Malik Ishaq, the co-founder of banned Lashkar-e-Jhangvi.
Jamaat-e-Islami’s Information Secretary Anwar Niazi says they will condemn any attempt by the authorities to ban ASWJ. The political party is also a member of the Difa-e-Pakistan Council.
“Every time any such ban on a religious organisation occurs, it is either on the instructions of the US or given by pro-US elements in the government,” Niazi told The Express Tribune. He said the ASWJ were “all patriotic Pakistanis.”
Jamaatud Dawa spokesperson Yahya Mujahid issued a statement condemning the ban and said that it was an attempt to harass the Difa-e-Pakistan Council politically. “If there is any accusation against the ASWJ, it should be presented in the courts and this ban is without any evidence.”
Mujahid also said that the ASWJ had only been banned after the DPC began holding rallies for the defence of Pakistan and it was being done due to “external pressure.”
ASWJ is also allegedly known as the political wing of the banned militant outfit Sipah-e-Sahaba, known for its sectarian ideology and violence.
The secretariat in Lahore, Farooq-e-Azam, has also been host to addresses by several members of ASWJ and speakers affiliated with banned outfit Lashkar-e-Jhangvi.
During a conference on September 7, 2011, banners with the name of Sipah-e-Sahaba were put up on the walls of the secretariat and speeches inciting violence against the Shia community were given by the speakers.
Ludhianvi also went to the Kot Lakhpat Jail in Lahore, with armed ASWJ guards to receive Malik Ishaq on his release after imprisonment of more than a decade. Members of ASWJ had welcomed Ishaq and showered him with rose-petals at the jail’s gate.

    Comments:

    AW:
Using politics of hate and religious symbols to control masses, ASWJ is not a representative of majority of Sunni community in Pakistan, it is foreign funded terrorist organisation whose domain is it’s hate spreading, violent madrassas built with Saudi and other Gulf monarchy’s financial help, because these monarchies feel uncomfortable to see prosperous Pakistan.

    WW:
A ban only on paper is not good enough to control these jihadi organisation who have brought the country on the brink. There should be total ban on holding any future rallies which might bring some sort of stability and relief to people who are living in constant fear.

    Farhan:
Its a section of GHQ strategic thinkers that have sympathy with this jihadi mindset, otherwise who does not know how brutal these barbarians are!
I agree with above comments that this mindset does not represent majority peaceloving sunnis living in Pakistan peacefully. But, when will this majority stand up?

ISLAMABAD – The Federal Interior Ministry on Saturday banned four religio-political organisations for their involvement in sectarian clashes and terrorism in the country. The banned organisations are Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat, formerly known as Sipah-e-Sahaba Pakistan, Shia Talba Tanzeem, Karachi-based People’s Aman Committee, a wing of the ruling Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), and Tehreek-e-Naujawan Ahle-Sunnat, Gilgit.
A senior official of the Interior ministry told Pakistan Today that a notification had been issued to the authorities of all four provinces, including Gilgit and Baltistan. He said that the decision to ban these organisations was taken in the backdrop of the recent terrorist attack in Kohistan that left 18 Shias dead. Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat Chairman Maulana Ahmad Ludhianvi condemned the ban, saying that the government had banned his group at the behest of the USA. He said that for the last six months, Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat had been drawing people’s attention to the country’s defence from the platform of Difa-e-Pakistan Council, which may have irked Washington.

  3. Peoples Aman Committee (Peoples Peace Committee) was active in Karachi specially in area of Liyari and was repeatedly pointed out during the incidents of violence and target killings in the city. The Organization was accused for promoting the ethnic hatred and violence in Karachi.
Ahle Sunnatwal Jammat was formed after when the government banned Sipahe Sahaba because of her involvement in promoting the sectarianism across the country. After the ban imposed on SSP her name was changed into Ahle Sunnatwal Jammat. The organization in her present status was key part of Defense of Pakistan council -an alliance of the religious parties. Malik Ishaq Co-founder of Lashkar Jhangvi- another sectarian banned outfit- remained participating from the platform of Ahle Sunnatwal Jammat in the rallies of Defense of Pakistan Council.
Shiite Student Action Committee or Shia Talba Action Committee (STAC) and Tanzeem Noujawanan Ahlsunnat (TNA) do not hold their history much older and were recently established with their strong presence in the Gilgit Baltistan. Both of these organizations remained involved in promoting the sectarianism and TNA also justifies the killings of their opponents.

Three more religious groups bannedOur Staff Reporter | Back Page | From the Newspaper 3 hours ago
The ASWJ, known previously as the Sipah-i-Sahaba Pakistan (SSP), is taking part in activities of a recently-formed group of religious organisations, Difa-i-Pakistan Council, which recently attracted large crowds at some of its public meetings (Karachi above) in different cities. — Reuters
ISLAMABAD: The government banned on Saturday another three religious/charity organisations working in the country.

According to a senior official of the interior ministry, with the latest ban imposed on Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat (ASWJ), Al Harmain Foundation (AHF) and Rabita Trust (RT), the number of outlawed organisations and groups has risen to 38. The three organisations were outlawed by the United Nations in 2009 under a resolution adopted by the Security Council.

The ASWJ, known previously as the Sipah-i-Sahaba Pakistan (SSP), is taking part in activities of a recently-formed group of religious organisations, Difa-i-Pakistan Council.

The council recently attracted large crowds at some of its public meetings in different cities where it lambasted both Islamabad and Washington.

The council may strongly react to the government’s decision to ban one of its important members.

The AHF is a Saudi Arabia-based organisation and also working in Pakistan.

The official said the interior ministry had sent letters to the four provincial home secretaries, informing them about the ban on the three organisations. According to the BBC, ASWJ chief Maulana Ahmed Ludhyanvi expressed ignorance about any such ban. However, he said if it was true he would opt for a legal fight. “We are a peaceful organisation,” he was quoted as saying. “If anyone places a ban on us…they are trying to place a ban on Pakistan.”

A document, which the BBC describes as a notification issued by the interior ministry that was not publicly announced, claimed that the ASWJ was suspected to be involved in acts of terrorism in the country and, therefore, it was being added to the first schedule of the Anti-Terrorism Act, 1997.

The organisations previously banned by the government are: Lashkar-i-Jhangvi, Sipah-i-Muhammad Pakistan (banned on Aug 14, 2001), Jaish-i-Muhammad, Lashkar-e-Taiba, Sipah-i-Sahaba Pakistan, Tehrik-i-Jaafria Pakistan, Tehrik-i-Nifaz-i-Shariat-i-Muhammadi, Tehrik-i-Islami (on Jan 14, 2002), Al Qaeda (on March 17, 2003), Millat-i-Islamia Pakistan, Khuddam-ul-Islam, Islami Tehreek Pakistan (on Nov 15, 2003), Jamiat-ul-Ansar, Jamiat-ul-Furqan, Hizbut Tehrir (on Nov 20, 2003), Khair-un-Naas International Trust (on Oct 27, 2004), Balochistan Liberation Army (on April 7, 2006), Islamic Students Movement of Pakistan (on Aug 21, 2006), Lashkar-i-Islam, Ansar-ul-Islam, Haji Namdar Group (on June 30, 2008), Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (on Aug 25, 2008), Jamatud Daawa, Al-Akhtar Trust and Al-Rashid Trust (banned under the UNSC resolution 1267 on Dec 10, 2008), Shia Talba Action Committee, Markaz-i-Sabeel (Gilgit), Tanzeem Naujawan-i-Sunnat (Gilgit), People’s Aman Committee, Balochistan Republican Army, Balochistan Liberation Front, Lashkar-i-Balochistan, Balochistan Liberation United Front and Balochistan Musallah Difa Tanzeem (banned in 2011).

Sunni Tehrik was put on a watchlist on Jan 14, 2002.
